HEAD NURSE​/SENIOR Professional NURSE Old Age ; Closing Date

Vredendal Old Age Home, a programme of Badisa, invites applications from an enthusiastic, responsible and motivated Head Nurse to join our team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring high-quality nursing and care services to older persons and persons with disabilities, as well as providing effective leadership and supervision of nursing and care staff.

• Ensure that appropriate norms, standards and best practices for the care of older persons are maintained.
• Coordinate and supervise the daily nursing care of residents.
• Identify residents’ nursing and care needs.
• Develop, implement, evaluate and regularly review individual care plans.
• Supervise, support and provide training to caregivers and nursing staff.
• Administer, control, store and maintain accurate records of scheduled and other medication in accordance with applicable legislation and procedures.
• Monitor infection prevention and control, wound care, observations and general health care.
• Monitor residents’ physical, psychological and emotional well-being.
• Manage and report medical emergencies and referrals.
• Medication management.
• Manage staff, including duty rosters, supervision, support and performance management.
• Implement and monitor policies, procedures, protocols and quality management systems.
• Ensure compliance with statutory, professional and ethical requirements.
• Maintain accurate administration, records, statistics and reports.
• Communicate and liaise effectively with residents, families, staff, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders.
• Participate in management and assist with the development and implementation of procedures, manuals and information documents.
• Ensure responsible use and management of equipment and other assets.
• Be available for after-hours duties, weekends and public holidays when required.

• Diploma or Degree in Nursing.
• Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Minimum 2 years’ relevant professional nursing experience, preferably in the care of older persons.
• Valid personal professional indemnity insurance.
• Good knowledge of the physical and medical care of older persons and persons with disabilities.
• Knowledge of the Nursing Act, Older Persons Act and applicable healthcare and safety requirements.
• Knowledge and experience in the administration, management and control of scheduled medication.
• Knowledge of medication management, including CDU and blister packaging, will be advantageous.
• Good knowledge of infection prevention and control and quality management.
• Strong leadership, organisational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently as well as within a team.
• Good written and verbal communication skills in Afrikaans and English.
• Good computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Good administrative and report-writing skills.
• A valid driver’s licence will be advantageous.
• Willingness to work according to a duty roster, including day and night shifts, weekends and public holidays.
