The Department of Justice and Public Safety is recruiting for immediate and anticipated opportunities for Deputy Sheriff IC positions of various durations and in various locations. As a uniformed enforcement officer, you provide frontline safety and security for court facilities, prisoner escorts, completion of searches, execution of warrants of arrest, and enforcement of judgments. The Office of the High Sheriff will further support you with ongoing enforcement training

The Deputy Sheriff IC is a uniformed position considered a “Position of Trust” and is a designated as a Peace Officer pursuant to Section 2 of the Criminal Code of Canada. The Deputy Sheriff IC reports directly to a Deputy Sheriff II supervisor and may work in any of the Law Courts in Newfoundland and Labrador. You will:
- Provide security to all present in a court room (judges, staff, legal counsel, victims of crime, accused persons and prisoners)
- Ensure security of exhibits to be presented before the court
- Conduct point-of-entry screening and escorting visitors into restricted areas or directing to appropriate courtrooms
- Monitor prisoner and public activity, conducting risk assessments on accused persons and other patrons of the court
- Conduct individual body and court facility searches
- Execute warrants of arrest
- Provide jury administration
- Release prisoners following appropriate checks of outstanding charges/jurisdictional holds
Your education includes completion of a diploma in law enforcement or criminology, or you have corrections/police officer training, or equivalent combination of training and experience in security or enforcement. You have experience in frontline enforcement, security, corrections, or as a military professional

You have a passion for law enforcement with knowledge of the criminal court justice system and use of force framework principles. You quickly assess situations, make sound decisions, and communicate clearly with officers, management, court staff, and the public. You uphold the principals of privacy while navigating complex situations in a professional and calm manner.
Conditions of Offer- Proof of valid Class 5 Driver’s license
- Recent and satisfactory Security Clearance
- Completion of a successful Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE), Sheriff’s Officer Physical Aptitude Test (SOPAT), or the Police Fitness Assessment (PFA)
- Recent and satisfactory medical and psychological assessment (including vision and hearing acuity test). Arrangements will be made by the Selection Committee. Associated costs will be the responsibility of the candidate or may be eligible for coverage by the department with a return for service agreement.
- Willing to accept travel throughout the province, including Circuit Courts
- Willing to accept evenings, weekends and holidays (occasional)
- Acknowledges requirements for completion of use of force framework certification
- Acknowledges requirement for carrying restricted and prohibited weapons
- Acknowledges requirement for use of force
- Acknowledges requirement for maintaining certifications as prescribed
