Overview

The conductor is a member of a train crew, responsible for the safe movement of trains and railway cars. The conductor performs work safely such as manually making up or splitting up railcars on the train, manually securing the train by applying handbrakes, controlling the movement to load railway cars with product, obtaining authorizations, etc.

Salary: According to the collective agreement

Status: Permanent - Unionized

Schedule: 14 on / 14 off or 13/15 – 12 hours per day

Priority: Will be given to candidates living in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Responsibilities
  • Understand and comply with all rules, regulations, safety procedures and standards from the company and several government agencies, including Transport Canada
  • Safely manage, control, and communicate the movements of the train and railcars using radio and by written authorization
  • In all weather conditions, manually operate track switches, apply and release handbrakes, connect hoses, and perform safety inspections
  • Read, interpret, and execute work lists
  • Prepare required daily reports, both manually and/or electronically
  • Conduct job briefings before and during duty and interact effectively with railway authorities
  • Other related tasks
General Requirements
  • Must possess a high school diploma
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Is or has recently been a qualified railway conductor
  • Must be prepared to work in adverse weather conditions
  • During the 13 or 14-day work cycle, must be prepared to work on call on a 24-hour basis
