We are seeking a Risk Management Officer to protect our people, assets, and mission by leading loss prevention efforts and internal claims investigations across our retail and program operations.

Job Summary

The Risk Management Officer is responsible for identifying, mitigating, and investigating operational risks across the organization's retail stores, donation centers, warehouses, and program sites. This role focuses on loss prevention (theft, fraud, inventory shrinkage, safety incidents) and claims investigations (workers' compensation, general liability, property, and customer/employee incident claims).

Key Responsibilities

Additional duties may be assigned as operational needs require.

Safety Program
  • Review and approve safety and loss prevention policies, procedures, and training programs prior to organization-wide rollout.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex, high-severity, or sensitive investigations.
  • Maintain senior-level relationships with law enforcement and regulatory agency leadership.
  • Maintain safety and loss prevention policies in alignment with applicable accreditation standards, ensuring the organization remains audit- and inspection-ready at all times.
Loss Prevention
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve loss prevention programs across all retail and donation locations.
  • Analyze shrinkage, theft, and inventory loss trends; recommend corrective action plans.
  • Conduct site audits and safety/security assessments at stores, donation centers, and warehouses.
  • Design and deliver loss prevention training for store managers, donation attendants, and frontline staff.
  • Partner with store leadership to implement physical security measures (CCTV, access control, cash-handling protocols).
  • Monitor and respond to internal theft, external theft (shoplifting), and organized retail crime trends.
  • Maintain incident reporting systems and ensure timely, accurate documentation across all locations.
Claims Investigations
  • Lead investigations into workers' compensation claims, slip-and-fall incidents, property damage, and general liability claims.
  • Interview claimants, witnesses, and employees; gather and preserve evidence (photos, video, statements, documentation).
  • Partner with HR and Legal on internal misconduct or fraud investigations related to claims.
  • Determine claim validity and compile investigative findings and recommendations for internal stakeholders.
  • Identify patterns of fraudulent or suspicious claims and implement preventive controls.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential investigation case files in compliance with organizational policy and legal standards.
  • Coordinate with third-party administrators (TPAs), insurance brokers, and legal counsel on active claims.
Program & Compliance Support
  • Ensure loss prevention and investigation practices comply with applicable OSHA, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Track and report key risk metrics (incident rates, shrinkage %, claim frequency/severity) to Executive Leadership as needed.
  • Develop emergency response and incident escalation protocols for stores and program sites.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Legal on cost-containment strategies related to claims trends.
  • Support due diligence and risk assessments for new store openings, donation sites, or program expansions.
