Serves in a trainee capacity receiving orientation and training in the principles, methods and techniques of community planning; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis class represents the entry level in the Planner series and differs from that of Planner II in that the Planner I performs specific and limited research assignments designed to provide experience in professional planning work; whereas Planner II performs fact‑finding and simple analysis work in assisting higher‑level planners in the conduct of various research studies and surveys pertinent to community planning.
Responsibilities- Receive orientation and training in the functions of community planning and pertinent research methods and techniques; under direct supervision,
- Assist in gathering land use information such as lot sizes, age of structure, tax valuation, public utilities, street conditions, etc.;
- Perform assigned readings and prepare reports; extract and compile or verify designated information from journals, reports and other resource documents;
- Assist in the tabulation of data involving the use of statistical concepts and formulae;
- May assist in analyzing and reporting the findings of processed data.
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, architecture, civil engineering, economics, sociology, public administration or a related field.
License RequirementPossession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii, Type 3) may be required for specific positions.
Knowledge OfResearch methods and statistical procedures; report writing; public relations.
Ability ToUnderstand and apply basic statistical concepts and formulae, and learn research methods and techniques used in community planning; read and comprehend a broad range of subjects; learn the functions of community planning; speak and write effectively.
