Serves in a trainee capacity, receiving on-and-off-the-job training to learn the theories, techniques and methods used in firefighting, land and sea rescue operations; and other emergency activities; performs firefighting tasks under immediate supervision; and performs other duties as required.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis class represents the entry level class in the Firefighting series. It involves training in the basic principles, practices, methods and techniques of firefighting and land and sea search and rescue work. Work assignments are made concurrently with orientation and training, and continued guidance and instructions are provided during such assignments. Supervision and control become more general as competence is gained and exhibited.
The following are examples of duties. The omission of specific duty statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
Attends training sessions and participates in informal discussions, on-the-job training, practice drills and demonstrations concerning firefighting, land and sea search and rescue and first aid procedures and techniques; studies firefighting manuals, departmental policies, procedures, fire codes, rules and regulations; participates in tours of fire districts to study and become familiar with the location of streets, buildings, hydrants, static water supplies, standpipe connections, sprinkler connections and fire escapes;
assists in the performance of a variety of firefighting and land and sea search and rescue work; performs salvage and clean-up work when fire is under control such as removing debris, loose beams, floorings, excess water and furnishings from the buildings; reloads hoses, ladders, and other firefighting and rescue tools and devices for return to station; washes, polishes, and services firefighting apparatus and equipment;
washes, tests and dries hose; performs housekeeping and maintenance tasks in maintaining station building, grounds and equipment.
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.
License RequirementPossession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Equivalent to State of Hawaii Type
3).
Prior to completion of probation, possession of a current State of Hawaii Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's certificate, a current First Responder or First Responder Refresher certificate, a current Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety Ocean Rescue Training Certificate or equivalent accredited certifications and a current American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate shall be required. (These certificates must be maintained on a current basis thereafter.)

understand and follow oral and written instructions; learn and apply firefighting, lifesaving, and fire prevention methods and techniques; learn hydraulics and the use and maintenance of various firefighting equipment; act quickly and effectively under adverse fire and/or emergency conditions; withstand the hardships and hazards connected with firefighting; swim and learn water rescue techniques; read and understand technically written material, rules and regulations pertaining to firefighting;
work effectively with others.
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper by the County of Maui for performance of the duties.
Physical Effort GroupingSpecial - Fire Rescue assignments only
Special Working Conditionsirregular hours, shift and weekend work, and exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions as required.

This recruitment is in anticipation of future vacancies. Applicants who pass the written examination remain eligible for employment under this recruitment for at least one (1) year and up to two (2) years from the notice of eligibility date.
