Overview

This posting is being used to fill Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) positions that provide services to students at various schools within the Maui District as needed and assigned by the Maui District Office.

Salary Range: All new external applicants will be placed on the initial step of the salary range. However, placement above the initial step of the salary range will be based on special characteristics and critical needs of the position, an applicant's exceptional qualifications, the availability of funds, and other relevant factors. Such appointments require prior approval. Hawaii State Department of Education employees will be placed on the salary range in accordance with Department regulations.

Position: Speech Language Pathologist V, SR-24; $6,812.00 - $8,032.00

Responsibilities
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and provides technical assistance to school and district personnel, SLPs, and communication aides;
  • Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) in the field of speech-language pathology and the role of speech-language services in the educational environment;
  • Prepares program plans, develops, evaluates, and communicates state and federal policies, regulations, procedures, standards, and guidelines to the field;
  • Evaluates effectiveness of the program and monitors student outcomes;
  • Administers a variety of speech-language assessment instruments and interprets test results in conducting diagnostic evaluation;
  • Supervises Clinical Fellows, coaches and mentors lower-level SLPs.
Basic Education Requirement

Applicants must possess a master's degree from an accredited college or university in a speech-language pathology or communication sciences and disorders program approved by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

Experience Requirement

Applicants must have progressively responsible work experience of the kind, quality, and quantity described below:

  • Speech-Language Pathologist V:
    Specialized Experience 2 years;
    Supervisory Experience 2 years;
    Total Experience 4 years

For level IV and above, at least one (1) year of experience must have been comparable to the next lower level in this series.

Specialized and Supervisory Experience
  • Specialized Experience
    :
    Professional experience as an SLP must have equipped the applicant with a full professional understanding of the theories, research and evidence-based practices of speech-language pathology and the proper application of practices which are appropriate to the student’s educational, developmental, and social needs.
  • Supervisory

    Experience:

    Planning, organizing, scheduling, and directing the work of others;
  • Assigning and reviewing their work;
  • Advising them on difficult work problems; and/or,
  • Training and developing subordinates.
  • Certificate and License Requirements
  • Valid Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA); and,
  • Valid State of Hawaii Speech Pathologist license.
  • Driver's License Requirement
    :
    Applicants must possess a current, valid driver's license.

    Quality of Experience

    Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered.

    :
    The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable.

    Requirements

    Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example:
    Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example:
    Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.

    Temporary Assignment and Documents
    • Temporary Assignment: Claims of Temporary Assignment (TA) experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements must be verified and attached to the application using one of the options below:
    • A copy of the applicant’s TA History Report or equivalent system-generated report;
    • A signed letter from the applicant’s supervisor that includes the applicant’s name, his/her TA job title, the TA start and end dates (from mm/yy to mm/yy), his/her specific TA duties performed, and either the TA hours worked per week or total TA hours worked; or,
    • Copies of the applicant’s signed SF-10 Forms.
