These positions are with the Hawaii State Judiciary and involve social work within court programs. Duties are program-specific and may include a broad range of clients and skills. The work emphasizes evidence-based practices, collaboration, and outcomes-focused casework to promote client behavioral changes and public safety.
Responsibilities- Work in court programs with a variety of clients and issues, such as supervision of juvenile law violators, adult law violators, defendants released from Hawaii State Hospital, or juvenile status offenders.
- Conduct child custody/visitation evaluations; assist protection order petitioners; assist in child welfare cases referred to Family Court; supervise juveniles temporarily detained; engage family and community in juvenile cases.
- Address issues including substance abuse, mental health, domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, child abuse and neglect, trauma, disputed custody/visitation, and restitution.
- Provide intensive social case work and related services for complex cases; may supervise a small group of less experienced social workers; may serve at a field location and provide technical consultation within a program area.
Education Requirement: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree that includes at least twelve (12) semester credit hours in social work, social welfare, criminal justice, human services, counseling, psychology, sociology, or related social sciences.
Experience & Substitutions: Excess work experience or other professional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis as described below, provided the experience demonstrates written reporting, interpretation of complex material, and problem solving abilities.

Experience:
Two and one-half (2-1/2) years of progressively responsible professional social work experience with assessment, planning, and coordination of services in collaboration with other professionals and agencies. - Substitution Allowed:
- A bachelor’s degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration may qualify for Social Worker II or six (6) months of experience.
- A master’s degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration may qualify for Social Worker III or one and one-half (1-1/2) years of experience.
- A Ph.D. in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration may qualify for Social Worker IV or two and one-half (2-1/2) years of experience.
Experience that does not provide professional social work concepts, theories, and appropriate practice cannot be considered qualifying. Examples include: providing supportive services to other professionals; determining welfare eligibility; providing vocational, educational, psychological, or pastoral counseling; occupational or physical therapy; certain volunteer or trainee experiences; and other listed examples.
Certifications & Requirements- Selective Certification - Driver's License: A current and valid driver’s license is required.
- PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Requirement: Certain positions may involve contact with detainees or inmates; applicants must not have disqualifying incidents as defined by PREA regulations.
Most positions may function as probation officers and involve case management and collaboration with clients who may have mental health issues, behavioral problems, or complex family dynamics.
