Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is seeking 2 Acute General Paediatric Consultants interested in working with our current team, who are a dynamic and passionate group dedicated to delivering high quality care for children and young people living in Wakefield, Pontefract and Dewsbury. Posts will combine education and career development with practical patient facing care. We support the development and maintenance of specialist interests within paediatrics, with provision of general and sub-speciality out-patient services across all 3 hospitals within the trust:
Pinderfields General Hospital, Pontefract General Infirmary and Dewsbury & District Hospital.

Job responsibilities

The main duties of both posts will include:

  • Consultant of the week (COW) cover for acute paediatrics at PGH (CAU/ward/HDU)
  • On site 08:30 - 16:30 hrs Monday-Friday (rotational; approximately 1 in 7 weeks)
  • Two consultants covering at any one time – one taking GP referrals and covering the Children's Assessment Unit and a second covering the inpatient Paediatric Ward and HDU
  • Consultant of the week (COW) cover for acute paediatrics at DDH (CAU open 10:00-22:00)
  • On site 10:00 - 18:00 hrs then non-resident 18:00-22:00 Monday-Thursday (with a day off on Friday; rotational; approx. 1 in 13 weeks)
  • A team of 3 paediatric doctors cover CAU at DDH (one consultant, one FY2/ST1-3 trainee and one ST4-8 trainee); both trainees on site 10:00-22:00
  • Friday COW shift (10:00-22:00) on a 1 in 12 basis before 19:00-08:30 weekend shifts
  • On-call duties overnight Mon-Fri (approx. 1 in 11 basis): resident at PGH 16:00-21:30 then non-resident on call 21:30-08:30
  • On-call duties at weekend (approx. 1 in 5 basis); weekend on calls in paediatrics shared with colleagues with one of the following shift patterns (3 consultants on per weekend):
    1) 08:30-12:30 resident at PGH then non-resident on call for DDH 12:30-22:00 Saturday and 08:30-14:30 resident at PGH then non-resident on call for PGH 14:30-19:00 Sunday;
    2) similar pattern with extended Saturday/Sunday shifts;
    3) 19:00-21:30 resident at PGH then non-resident on call 21:30-08:30 Saturday and Sunday

Delivery of general paediatric outpatient clinics and sub-speciality clinics (dependent upon applicant's interest and expertise). Participation in the Department Safeguarding Rota (providing a safeguarding clinic, seeing up to 2 referrals from social care approximately once a month). Administrative duties, with appropriate office space and secretarial support. Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10PA timetable;

additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned based on skills and service needs.

Essential person specification requirements

To meet the requirements of this role, applicants must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practise
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT (or CESR / equivalent);
    Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • CCT in General Paediatrics or within 6 months of CCT
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Broad experience in acute general paediatrics
  • Ability to manage paediatric emergencies and complex general cases
  • Experience of working in a DGH or equivalent setting
  • Understanding of RCPCH standards incl. Facing the Future
  • Expertise in safeguarding children and young people
  • Valid Level 3 safeguarding training
  • Valid BLS training
  • Valid APLS
  • Effective multidisciplinary team working
  • Understanding of clinical governance and patient safety
  • Participation in service development and rota sustainability
