Position: Higher Level Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a committed, resilient and enthusiastic Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a Primary SEMH School in Wakefield. This is a specialist SEMH provision supporting pupils who require additional emotional and behavioural support to achieve their full potential.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant or HLTA who thrives in a nurturing, trauma‑informed environment and is committed to helping pupils overcome barriers to learning.

About the Role

As a HLTA, you will play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across the school. You will work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals to provide high‑quality support for pupils with SEMH needs, autism, ADHD and associated learning difficulties.

Responsibilities
  • Delivering planned lessons and interventions in the absence of the teacher
  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
  • Promoting positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies
  • Building trusted relationships with pupils, families and staff
  • Assisting with personalised learning plans and EHCP targets
  • Supporting the implementation of therapeutic and restorative approaches
  • Helping to create a safe, engaging and inclusive learning environment
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • HLTA qualification or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs
  • Strong behaviour management and de‑escalation skills
  • A calm, patient and empathetic approach
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Resilience, flexibility and a positive attitude
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures
