Learning and Behaviour Support

Wakefield
Full‑Time | Long‑Term | Temp to Perm

Start Date:

September 2026

We are currently recruiting on behalf of a highly regarded secondary school in Wakefield for dedicated, resilient and compassionate Support Staff to join their specialist Resourced Provision.

This specialist provision supports secondary‑aged students (11–16) with a range of Communication and Interaction (C&I) needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), SEMH needs, speech, language and communication needs, and associated learning differences. Many students benefit from additional support with social communication, sensory regulation, emotional wellbeing and executive functioning. While academically capable, they require personalised strategies, structured routines and a nurturing environment to help them access learning, build confidence and develop independence.

The provision provides a calm, structured setting where students can access specialist support whilst remaining part of the wider mainstream school community wherever appropriate. The team is committed to helping every young person develop the skills, resilience and confidence needed to thrive both in school and beyond.

This is a full‑time, long‑term opportunity with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate.

The Role

As a member of the SEND team, you will play a key role in supporting students throughout the school day, helping them overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes both academically and socially.

Responsibilities
  • Supporting students within lessons and during targeted interventions
  • Helping students understand and manage social situations and develop positive peer relationships
  • Encouraging independence, confidence and engagement with learning
  • Supporting emotional regulation using calm, consistent and student‑centred approaches
  • Assisting students with communication, organisation and transitions throughout the school day
  • Working alongside teachers and SEND professionals to deliver personalised support strategies
  • Promoting inclusion within both the specialist provision and mainstream lessons where appropriate
  • Building trusting, positive relationships that help students feel safe, understood and able to succeed
The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for individuals who are:

  • Patient, empathetic and nurturing
  • Passionate about supporting young people with Autism and communication needs
  • Calm, resilient and able to adapt their approach to meet individual needs
  • Strong communicators with excellent relationship‑building skills
  • Committed to promoting inclusion, independence and student wellbeing
  • Able to work collaboratively as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team

Previous experience within education, SEND, youth work, residential care, health and social care or behaviour support would be advantageous but is not essential.

What We Offer
  • A welcoming and supportive specialist team
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • Opportunity to secure a permanent position
  • Valuable experience within a well‑established secondary Inclusion Resource
  • The opportunity to make a genuine, lasting difference to the lives of young people every day

If you are passionate about helping secondary‑aged students with additional needs reach their full potential and believe every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed, we’d love to hear from you.
