Are you a Psychology graduate looking to gain meaningful, hands-on experience supporting young people with additional needs before pursuing a career in Educational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Speech & Language Therapy, Mental Health or Teaching?

We are recruiting on behalf of a highly regarded secondary school in Wakefield for a compassionate, resilient and enthusiastic Psychology Graduate to join their specialist Resourced Provision.

This specialist provision supports secondary-aged students (11–16) with a range of Communication and Interaction (C&I) needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), SEMH needs, speech, language and communication needs, and associated learning differences. Many students benefit from additional support with social communication, sensory regulation, emotional wellbeing and executive functioning. While academically capable, they require personalised strategies, structured routines and a nurturing environment to help them access learning, build confidence and develop independence.

The provision offers a calm, structured environment where students receive specialist support while remaining part of the wider mainstream school community wherever appropriate. You’ll work alongside experienced SEND professionals, gaining invaluable practical experience supporting young people with diverse learning and emotional needs.

This is a full-time, long-term opportunity with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate.

As part of the SEND team, you will play a vital role in helping students overcome barriers to learning, develop confidence and achieve positive outcomes both academically and socially.

Responsibilities include:

• Supporting students within lessons and during targeted interventions
• Helping students develop social communication skills and positive peer relationships
• Encouraging independence, resilience and engagement with learning
• Supporting emotional regulation using calm, consistent and trauma-informed approaches
• Assisting students with communication, organisation and transitions throughout the school day
• Working alongside teachers and SEND professionals to implement personalised support strategies
• Promoting inclusion within both the specialist provision and mainstream classrooms where appropriate
• Building trusting relationships that help students feel safe, understood and successful

This opportunity would particularly suit a Psychology graduate looking to build practical experience working with young people before progressing into further study or a professional career.

• A Psychology graduate (or graduating this summer)
• Passionate about child development, behaviour and mental health
• Patient, empathetic and nurturing
• Interested in Autism, communication needs and SEND
• Calm, resilient and adaptable
• A confident communicator with excellent relationship-building skills
• Committed to promoting inclusion, independence and student wellbeing

Previous experience supporting children or young people through education, youth work, care, mentoring, coaching or voluntary work would be beneficial but is not essential.
