Autism Teaching Assistant – Specialist School
Are you passionate about supporting autistic children and young people? Do you have experience working with Autism, or are you looking to build a rewarding career supporting pupils with additional needs?
We are recruiting on behalf of a specialist school in Wakefield that provides outstanding education and support for pupils with Autism and associated communication, sensory and learning needs. The school is seeking a caring, patient and resilient Autism Teaching Assistant to join their dedicated team.
About the RoleAs an Autism Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, therapists and other support staff to help pupils access learning in a way that meets their individual needs. You’ll build positive relationships with students, support their communication and emotional regulation, and help create a calm, structured learning environment where they can thrive.
You will support pupils with a range of needs, including:
- Autism
- Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
- Sensory processing differences
- Social communication difficulties
- Emotional regulation needs
- Moderate learning difficulties
- Anxiety and behaviours that communicate unmet needs
Many pupils benefit from visual supports, predictable routines and personalised learning approaches, so experience using strategies such as visual timetables, PECS, Makaton or other communication methods would be advantageous, although full training can be provided.

The ideal candidate will be:
- Patient, empathetic and understanding
- Calm and confident in supporting children with complex needs
- Passionate about helping autistic pupils achieve their full potential
- Able to build trusting relationships with pupils, staff and families
- Keen to learn and develop through specialist SEND training
