Position: Managing Technician (Permanent)
Managing Technician

An established and growing engineering Consultancy is seeking a Senior or Managing Technician to take full ownership of its drawing office function and play a meaningful role within the senior leadership team. This is a strategically important appointment for the business, aimed at an experienced technician who can operate with autonomy, authority and accountability, sitting above day-to-day production while remaining technically credible and hands-on when required.

The successful individual will lead and oversee a small but capable technical team, currently consisting of a senior technician and a technician, and will be responsible for setting, maintaining and enforcing technical standards across all civil and structural output. The role is naturally biased towards civils, however a strong understanding of structural detailing and coordination is highly desirable, enabling effective oversight of multidisciplinary deliverables and confident support of engineers across both disciplines.

The Consultancy delivers a broad range of civil and structural engineering services across the built environment, supporting clients from early feasibility and planning stages through to detailed design and construction. Project work includes civil infrastructure and drainage design, highways design, flood risk assessments, structural design across a range of materials, temporary works, inspections, feasibility studies and technical advisory services. The drawing office plays a critical role in the successful delivery of these services, and this position will have direct influence over how technical information is produced, coordinated and presented to clients and stakeholders.

The business is committed to investing in its technical capability and has made significant, ongoing investment in industry-leading software and digital tools to support efficient, coordinated and high-quality delivery. This commitment underpins the importance of the role, providing the successful individual with the systems, resources and backing required to lead from the front, maintain high technical standards and deliver consistently for clients.

This role carries genuine leadership and commercial responsibility and will suit someone comfortable acting as the senior technical authority within the drawing office. Responsibilities will include mentoring and developing technicians, establishing best practice, improving BIM and CAD workflows, and driving consistency, efficiency and quality across all outputs. The role may be positioned at Associate level to reflect its seniority, with direct involvement in leadership discussions and wider business decision-making as part of the Consultancy's senior leadership team.

Strong technical capability remains essential. You will have a practical and confident understanding of BIM processes, with the ability to work effectively within Revit environments, alongside strong experience using Civil 3D and Flow software. While the role is focused on oversight and leadership, there will be times when you are expected to contribute directly to technical production, particularly on complex, sensitive or time-critical elements of projects.

Candidates are likely to come from a civil engineering background, with demonstrable experience overseeing technical teams within a consultancy environment and acting as a point of authority for technical quality. Incorporated Engineer status is viewed positively, though not essential, and equivalent experience will be fully considered. The Consultancy is seeking a technically assured, detail-driven and commercially aware individual who can operate at senior level while remaining approachable and collaborative.

This opportunity will appeal to a senior technician ready to step into a leadership and influence-led role, or an existing managing technician seeking broader responsibility, visibility and long-term progression within a growing Consultancy.
