About the roleThis role is currently pending Agenda for Change banding.
The post holder will have a key role in:
- Creating a shared vision and promote safe and appropriate transfusion practice for the service across the trust.
- Facilitating an environment in which critical appraisal of practice is the norm.
- Education and training of trust staff in clinical blood transfusion.
- Work alongside the Lead Transfusion Practitioner/Chief Biomedical Scientist on the development and implementation of trust policies and procedures for blood transfusion, working with medical, nursing, scientific and other stakeholders for the transfusion of blood, components and products.
- Maintain statutory requirements e.g. Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (BSQR) 2005, United Kingdom Accreditation Services UKAS (ISO
15189: 2022), CQC. - Facilitating safe practice, preventing blood wastage and auditing blood usage/rejected samples and other appropriate audits, working in collaboration with the laboratory Biomedical Scientist (BMS) staff.
- Aware of national and regional initiatives and subsequent transfer of these into practice.
- Establish, co‑ordinate and evaluate education and training programmes in all aspects of blood transfusion for all relevant staff groups, in addition develop links and partnership working with education providers.
- Be the link between the blood transfusion laboratory and clinical transfusion practices on wards, community and external sites i.e. Hospices
- Responsible for providing a daily on‑site service, thus contributing to improving the safety and effectiveness of the practice of blood transfusion across the trust.
- Responsible for providing evidence‑based practice in the specialism of Blood Transfusion.
- Assisting with any identified and agreed aspects of the service, in the development of care systems and protocols, working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team and developing excellent interdepartmental relationships with excellent communication, and a focus on quality improvement.
- In collaboration with the blood transfusion department, attend major haemorrhage declarations and provide specialist advice.
- Ensure cost effective use of all resources and appropriate governance management.
- Promote programmes of health education and health promotion relevant to service.
- Work within national policy frameworks relevant to the Blood Transfusion service and trust local guidance.
- Deliver Transfusion induction training, material and competency assessments for new clinical staff and students.
- Act as mentor/positive role model to students/other clinical and laboratory staff.
- Supervision, including the planning of tasks for junior staff/team members and assist with individualised performance review’s and objective setting for junior staff.
- Managing a wide range of complex, specialist and sometimes difficult priorities.
- Act as a resource of expert specialist knowledge and skill base for clinical and Laboratory staff across the Trust and communicate complex information to all levels within the organisation.
- Identify opportunities to work collaboratively with others on a range of initiatives aimed at encouraging more efficient and effective use of blood, blood components and products.
- Be an integral member of the Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT), Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC) and Emergency Blood Management Group (EBMG). Providing specialist Transfusion advice in regards incidents, changes in practice, technological services i.e. Electronic Blood tracking.
- Participate in the audit timetable in relation to clinical guidelines/policies (internal, national comparative audits (NCA)).
- Analysis and interpretation of detailed and complex data from a variety of sources, often conflicting. Identify trends, generate reports and devise action plans/recommendations and follow up accordingly.
- Identify areas of improvements by way of internal audit, both clinically and laboratory based, to improve the Transfusion service across the Trust i.e. blood usage/wastage/rejected samples, adherence to PBM…
