About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic pharmacy technician to join our pharmacy team at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (MYTT) as a Specialist Clinical Pharmacy Technician - Homecare.

The MYTT Homecare service has seen significant growth over recent years, with rapid growth expected to continue with the introduction of new medicines and services. Currently over 4000 patients are accessing Homecare services at MYTT.

A main focus of the role will be to clinically validate Homecare prescriptions across a broad range of specialities including rheumatology, gastroenterology and dermatology. The post-holder will also contribute to the clinical validation of prescriptions within the dispensary and the Technical Services Unit for treatments administered on the Medical Infusion Unit (MIU). This post will involve close collaborative working with clinical teams across the Trust to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality care for patients receiving medicines via Homecare and on the MIU.

You will be part of our progressive pharmacy team, always looking for innovative and improved ways of working and striving for excellence to provide the highest standards of care for our patients. You will be based across Pinderfields and Dewsbury Hospitals but may be required to work across all sites if needed.

Training and support will be given and a commitment to continuing professional development is essential.

Main duties
  • Clinically validate Homecare prescriptions in accordance with local procedures
  • Clinically validate other appropriate prescriptions (for example on the Medical Infusion Unit (MIU)) in accordance with local procedures
  • Plan and carry out regular audits against applicable regulatory, professional and clinical standards relating to areas of work within Homecare and MIU
  • Assist in writing/reviewing appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Support clinical teams with the planning and implementation of projects such as biosimilar switches
  • Work closely with clinical teams to establish processes which will minimise wastage and optimise safety and efficiencies on the MIU
  • Work closely with clinical teams to establish processes for efficient prescription management within Homecare and MIU
  • Work at ward level as part of the Medicines Optimisation team , promoting good communication between pharmacy and ward staff to ensure a safe, efficient and cost-effective Medicines Optimisation service

Essential person specification requirements

Qualifications:

  • Registered as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • NVQ Level 3, BTEC or equivalent in Pharmaceutical Sciences plus specialist training and experience to degree or equivalent level
  • Accredited Checking Technician
  • BTEC level 4 Professional Diploma in Pharmacy Clinical Services (or willing to work towards/equivalent experience)

Experience:

  • Significant post qualification experience
  • Experience of working in the NHS (including hospital pharmacy)

Knowledge and Awareness:

  • Awareness of own limitations and when to refer to senior staff for help
  • Good, up to date clinical knowledge around medicines
