Shift Engineer, Wakefield

Salary: £56,500 / annum. Shift pattern: 4 days on, 4 off, 4 nights, 4 off. Hours of work: 6:00 – 18:00.

Job Overview

The Shift Engineer works in an automated Wakefield bakery, driving mandatory maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement across bulk handling, processing, packaging, site services and PLC control systems.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out electrical and mechanical support for all assets, including bulk handling, processing and packaging equipment.
  • Support operations during start‑ups, shutdowns, size changes and process troubleshooting.
  • Plan and execute preventative maintenance and identify opportunities to improve plant reliability.
  • Lead optimisation projects aimed at increasing plant efficiency, reducing downtime and saving energy.
  • Adopt emerging maintenance technologies and techniques within a 24/7 automated environment.
  • Collaborate with production, safety and hygiene teams to maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Develop robust, long‑term solutions to recurring faults and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Structured engineering training (apprenticeship, HNC or degree).
  • Experience of maintenance in an FMCG/food environment.
  • Knowledge of food safety legislation and systems (PUWER, IOSH).
  • Proficient with MS Office and SAP.
  • Excellent communication skills – able to build long‑term relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Coaching and mentoring experience – responsible for training others.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving ability to predict and resolve issues quickly.
  • Decision‑making skills – make timely, risk‑aware decisions.
