Job Summary

37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with flexibility to work 5 out of 7 days, including weekends and bank holidays. Two posts are available: one at Fieldhead Hospital (Wakefield) and one at Kendray site (Barnsley). The role requires coordinating daily operations, managing changing priorities, and ensuring services run safely and smoothly, with work across other sites as required.

At present the role does not meet UK Visas and Immigration sponsorship requirements; we accept candidates who can prove the right to work in the UK or use alternative visa routes.

All employees are encouraged to have up-to-date flu vaccination.

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain and provide an effective, efficient and well‑coordinated porter/transport support service to the Trust and other NHS service users through service level agreements and formal contracts.
  • Line‑manage drivers and porters, including staff support, development, one‑to‑one meetings and appraisals.
  • Manage staff rotas to ensure full service coverage and liaise with stakeholders trust‑wide.
  • Identify and implement service improvements.
  • Manage a small fleet of vehicles, ensuring legal and safety compliance and overseeing maintenance.
  • Ensure all staff training is current and recorded.
Key Result Areas
  • Constantly review the service and implement new methods of delivery to ensure cost‑effective, high‑quality provision to clients and staff.
  • Lead, motivate and empower a team of well‑trained staff committed to achieving Trust performance targets.
  • Carry out staff appraisals and develop personal development plans for team members.
  • Provide senior managers with submissions for service developments and assist with business planning.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for porter/transport services and liaise with service users and other NHS organisations.
  • Maintain effective communication links with other heads of department.
  • Promote a culture of excellent customer service and a professional, caring image.
  • Develop and maintain risk assessments for the service; communicate outcomes.
  • Manage the financial budget of the services, raise requisitions and authorise payments.
  • Ensure health and safety matters are effectively conveyed to staff.
  • Prepare and manage local health and safety plans.
  • Control the waste compound, ensure removal and reporting of waste under legislation.
  • Develop waste segregation and minimisation arrangements, report performance.
  • Contribute to business continuity plans and green travel plan.
  • Manage taxi contract and provide transport service in accordance with policy.

Person Specification Essential Knowledge & Skills

Physical Attributes

Qualifications
  • ILM Management Certificate Level 3 or equivalent.
Desirable
  • NHS experience.
  • IOSH Certificate.
  • EDCL.
Training
  • Knowledge of hazardous waste regulations.
  • Knowledge of carriage of dangerous goods legislation.
Experience
  • Experience managing service budgets, including staffing, purchasing goods and supplies.
  • Substantial supervisory experience in specialised facilities service.
  • Experience managing health and safety for a service or department.
  • Experience in managing business change.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft packages and other IT programmes.
