Inpatient Coder – CPC
Position within Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. The role focuses on charge capture for professional services, ensuring accurate CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10 coding, and review of claim edits. Responsibilities include reviewing charge review errors, coding documentation, determining diagnoses and procedures, performing charge entry, resolving discrepancies, and serving as a liaison between coding operations and clinicians. Remote/virtual location.
Responsibilities- Review assigned charge review errors and claim edits for hospital-based services, including surgical procedures.
- Ensure correct charge capture and coding with correct CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10 codes and appropriate modifiers.
- Analyze medical documentation to verify principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures.
- Assign diagnostic and procedural codes following CMS guidelines and SMHC policies.
- Perform charge entry and discrepancy resolution.
- Act as liaison between Centralized Coding/Revenue Site Operations and physicians/clinical sites/departments.
- Assist in orienting and training new employees in the coding and charge capture area and cross‑train existing coders in new specialties.
- Associate’s degree in an allied health related field or two years of progressive medical records experience with exposure to medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and coding, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified Coding Specialist credentialing.
- 1–3 years of professional coding experience with multiple surgical specialties.
- Preferred experience in coding for neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, and/or gynecologic oncology procedures.
- Solid understanding of ICD‑10 and CPT coding and medical terminology, and knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, HMO, and commercial insurance plans.
- Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to interact with diverse populations.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and prioritize and organize work effectively.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment within standard practices and procedures.
