Position Summary: Academic Tutors support students at WWCC by providing personalized instruction in Math, Science, Writing, and other subjects as needed. Tutoring occurs in the center, via a virtual online space, and through eTutor. Tutors maintain schedules, record sessions, and assist with center operations and training.
General ResponsibilitiesAssist students with coursework and academic challenges in Math, Science, and Writing.
Employ questioning methods to guide learning.
Help with technology access and troubleshoot basic technical issues.
Rent and manage educational supplies like calculators and headsets.
Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions.
Adhere to FERPA, CRLA, and tutoring center policies.
Essential Functions- Tutor students using the questioning method.
- Assist students with basic technology issues such as logging in and using our computers.
- Rent out technology and educational supplies to students that are available in the center such as calculators and headsets.
- Keep accurate records of student tutoring sessions and store that data as instructed by the supervisor.
- Adhere to all standards of practice and expectations related to tutoring students such as FERPA rules and CRLA guidelines, and any other guidelines as set by the tutoring center.
- Maintain a consistent work schedule and report time accurately.
- Tutor must adhere to an agreed upon work schedule for both in person and online tutoring.
- Absences must be announced ahead of time to the supervisor.
- If possible, arrangements for shift coverage should be made.
- Electronic timecards should be submitted on time and accurately reflect time worked.
- Hours worked must not exceed scheduled work hours unless approved by the supervisor.
- Attend scheduled training sessions as set by the supervisor either in person or remotely.
- Perform tasks or reports assigned during these meetings in a timely fashion.
- Assist in general maintenance and upkeep of the center (e.g., wiping tables, cleaning boards, refilling supplies).
- Perform center related tasks as assigned such as introducing yourself to a class or explaining your role as a tutor to a group of visiting students.
- Attend review meetings with your supervisor and work to accomplish any necessary tasks or changes that may result from these meetings.
- Communicate well orally and relate meaningfully with students of diverse backgrounds.
- Work responsibly under supervision and as a member of a team.
- Demonstrate successful strategies for studying, time management, and self‑direction.
- Tutor students both in subject matter and study skills.
- Manage time and balance schedule between academic and work responsibilities.
- Maintain accurate records of hours worked.
- Complete evaluations when required.
- Dress appropriately and behave professionally.
- Use a variety of strategies to serve diverse learning needs and styles.
- Participate in training programs as requested.
- Tutor online and be familiar with available online platforms.
Required Qualifications:
- Completed at least one quarter of college education.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 each quarter employed as a tutor.
- Demonstrate strong understanding of content in mathematics, science, English, history, political science, or equivalent.
- Positive recommendation from a past instructor in your tutoring content area.
Preferred/Desired
Qualifications:
- Tutor students in both subject matter and study skills.
- Familiar with online learning platforms used at WWCC.
- Use varied strategies to serve diverse learning needs and styles.
The position is part‑time temporary and limited to up to 17 hours per week, located at the Walla Walla Campus. Work is performed mostly indoors in a classroom or office setting; remote tutoring may occur from a location with viable internet access.
