Position: Excise Tax Examiner 4 – ARESA
Location: Tumwater, Washington (telework with monthly office visits)
Department: Taxpayer Account Administration (TAA) – part of Department of Revenue
Job PurposeThe ARESA team requires an experienced Excise Tax Examiner to provide advanced-level support on tax programs including excise, forest, fish, cigarette and tobacco taxes, local sales tax, tax incentives, reseller permits, and distribution of state and local taxes. The incumbent will enforce compliance with the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act and act as a resource for tax policy, procedures, and interdivisional liaison functions.
Responsibilities- Act as a resource on rules, laws, and tax policy for assigned ARESA programs.
- Perform first-level theory and math reviews of desk examinations, apportionment, and incentive audits.
- Approve lower-level apportionment audit cases and cancellation requests.
- Maintain ATLAS system entries and perform account adjustments.
- Conduct full-scope financial examinations of tax records, returns, and audits to evaluate taxpayer compliance.
- Oversee procedures, training curriculum, and system specialist support for the ARESA Unit.
- Serve as an interdivisional liaison for tax assessment policies, procedures, and standard paragraph language.
- Backup supervisory functions such as work assignment, ATLAS approvals, and meeting facilitation.

- One year as an Excise Tax Examiner 3, or
- Two years of Department of Revenue senior/lead experience in accounting, auditing, compliance or tax administration with 12 semester (18 quarter) hours of accounting coursework, or
- Three years of non‑Department of Revenue senior/lead experience in accounting, compliance, auditing, or tax administration with 12 semester (18 quarter) hours of accounting coursework.
