The Labor and Personnel Division represents and advises state agencies and most colleges and universities on labor and employment issues, including labor negotiations, arbitrations, anti‑discrimination laws, wage laws, employee discipline, public disclosure laws, and family & medical leave laws. The division handles civil litigation related to wage & hour law and public disclosure, appears before administrative boards, independent arbitrators, and in state and federal courts.
SpecificResponsibilities Of The Position
- Meet with assigned clients—often high‑level managers or directors of state agencies—to provide options‑based advice on all aspects of labor and employment law
- Prepare witnesses for hearings
- Craft motions and legal pleadings
- Conduct and direct necessary legal research
- Respond to interrogatories and discovery
- Mediating cases
- Litigate cases
- Licensed to practice law in Washington State (law school accredited by the ABA or WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program)
- At least three years of experience in litigation and client advice
- Experience drafting briefs
- Interviewing and preparing witnesses for testimony
- Conducting hearings or oral arguments before administrative tribunals, Superior or Federal courts
- Professional client interaction and advice on substantial legal issues
- Excellent writing and advocacy skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to multi‑task
- Experience in labor and employment law is preferred; experience with labor contracts and advising human resources or upper‑level management is also desirable
