Position PurposeThe Security Officer supports the program of Security at Whitman College by patrolling the campus during the designated shift and dealing with emergency situations and potentially uncooperative people in a calm, responsible manner This position reports to the Director of Security.
Campus Patrols & Emergency Response (80%)- Patrol and inspect the buildings and grounds to maintain security from fire, theft, illegal entry, property damage, or unauthorized use of buildings.
- Respond to emergency situations using good judgment about approaching subjects or contacting the police or fire department.
- Ensure that doors and windows are locked.
- Ensure fire alarms and burglar alarms are in proper working condition.
- Perform first aid care and CPR when needed.
- Manage Whitman College First Responders during the designated shift.
- Adhere to safety rules and precautions in all phases of the work and while driving College vehicles.
- Always carry the required equipment furnished by the department while on shift.
- Maintain accurate notes and transfer them to the Current Security Log.
- Document all incident reports as appropriate and log into the Simplicity Advocate system.
- Identify potential safety hazards and report them to the appropriate department.
- Ability to actively and positively contribute to the College's core values of diversity, equity, inclusion, antiracism and access.
- Ability to patrol campus, walking for extended periods of time, covering long distances rapidly in case of emergency, and climbing stairs.
- Ability to pass first aid and CPR tests and perform, if needed, from a kneeling position.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work closely and congenially with faculty, students, and staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate a computer.
- Ability to operate college vehicles; have a valid Washington State driver's license.
- Ability to do shift work including night shift, weekends and holidays.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 1+ years of experience working within a security set.
