Bus Mechanic I

Salary Range: $34.32/hour to $40.84/hour

Target Hiring Wage: $34.32/hour, plus any applicable ASE Certifications

Plus, longevity premium pay at 4, 8, 12, 16 and 30 years

Valley Transit provides employee-only fully paid premiums for medical, dental, life and long-term disability through the Public Employees Benefits Board (PEBB). Qualifying dependents may be enrolled at the employee’s expense. A $24,000 Basic Life insurance policy is provided through the Washington Counties Insurance Fund. Employer and employee contributions are made to the State of Washington Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employees have the option to enroll in the State of Washington Department of Retirement System’s deferred Compensation program.

Employees also have the option to enroll in additional benefits which include Employee-Paid Long-Term Disability, Employee-Paid Flexible Benefits through American Family Life Assurance Company (AFLAC) and additional Employee-Paid Life Insurance coverage through Met Life. Valley Transit grants annual paid vacation to regular full-time employees, which starts at 8 hours per month and increases with continuous employment. All employees are eligible to accrue Washington Paid Sick Leave at a rate of 1 hour for every 40 hours worked, in addition, full-time employees will accrue Valley Transit Paid Sick Leave at a rate of .02115 per eligible paid hour.

Eight (8) paid holidays are provided annually. For specific operational roles, work may be required on certain holidays, with appropriate holiday compensation provided. Employees are paid four (4) floating holidays each calendar year. The number of paid floating holidays increases with continuous employment. Vision reimbursement of up to $300.00 as per contract period.

NATURE OF POSITION

Under direction of the Lead Mechanic and oversight of the Maintenance Manager, this position performs vehicle, equipment and facility inspections, servicing, repairs, and related activities, with emphasis on safety, efficiency, and responsiveness to operational needs. The Bus Mechanic I is distinguished from the Bus Mechanic II position by the further complexity of work assignments performed under minimal supervision along with having more experience than the Bus Mechanic II position.

REQUIRED

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug/alcohol screen, physical, and a criminal background check is a condition of employment for this position with Valley Transit. Must be able to communicate and follow written and oral instructions given in English. Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED, any higher education is desired. Minimum of five years of mechanical experience in transit, medium/heavy duty truck, automotive, related trade school or a combination of any of these preferred.

Must possess or be willing to acquire within 12 months of hire date a Class “B” State of Washington or Oregon Commercial Drivers’ License, with passenger and airbrake endorsements. Valley Transit will supply required training; employee will cover all costs related to testing and license fees, and CDL physical cost is reimbursable as per stated in current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Freon handlers’ certificate in accordance with 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F under section 608 of the Clean Air Act. Must possess or be willing to acquire First Aid/CPR certificate, forklift operator certificate. ASE Certifications in any of the areas of Automobile, Medium-Heavy Trucks, School Bus, and/or Transit Bus is preferred. As regulations change, incumbents are expected to obtain the State or Federal mandated certificates required to work on certain vehicles, vehicle systems or to handle hazardous materials.
