Location: Public Health Laboratories, Shoreline, WA
Position Type: Non-permanent appointment, 7‑month duration (Onsite/In-person)

Description

As a Facilities Maintenance Technician, you will help keep the state’s public health laboratory safe, reliable, and fully operational. Your on‑site work supports the agency’s mission by ensuring the facility, equipment, and mechanical systems perform at their best so staff, partners, and visitors can focus on critical public health work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform corrective maintenance on building systems, equipment, and facilities
  • Complete work orders for carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and general repairs
  • Support room setups, furniture moves, cleaning, and grounds care
  • Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, steam, hydraulic, pneumatic, and safety systems
  • Replace parts, filters, belts, and other components as part of planned maintenance
  • Diagnose issues in laboratory and building systems using digital and analytic tools
  • Maintain mechanical spaces and equipment through cleaning and upkeep
  • Handle materials and supplies with pallet jacks, lifts, and other equipment
  • Operate a state vehicle for maintenance‑related tasks
  • Monitor building automation systems and communicate alarms or needed adjustments

Required Qualifications

We value all relevant experience (paid or unpaid) and encourage applicants from all backgrounds. You must meet at least ONE of the following options. Experience may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities.

  • Option 1:
    Two years of general work experience in facilities, building, equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
  • Option 2: A one‑year technical certificate, trade school program, or apprenticeship in building maintenance, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or a closely related field.
Preferred / Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience
  • Experience working in a health services or laboratory environment.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

Conditions of Employment

Work setting:
On‑site in the lab; requires constant movement, ladder use up to 10 ft, heavy equipment handling, exterior work in inclement weather, respiratory protection, and adherence to biosafety level 3 protocols.

Schedule
  • Monday to Friday 8 AM to 5 PM
Travel Requirements
  • Occasional in‑state travel, possible overnight stays or multi‑day trips; must operate a state or private vehicle or provide alternative transportation.
Tools and Equipment
  • Primary mechanical and diagnostic tools are provided by the agency.
Customer Interactions
  • Interacts daily with internal lab staff, contractors, tradespeople, equipment representatives, and other external customers.
