Salary: £31,942 - £33,898 per year. Position:
Permanent.
Join our collaborative, research‑focused engineering team as an Experienced Mechanical / Electro‑Mechanical Workshop Technician. You will develop, maintain, and support the facilities and equipment that underpin our research across the Water and Climate Science team.
Responsibilities- Work closely with scientists and researchers to design and build research‑grade instruments and bespoke experimental systems.
- Produce machined parts and fully tested electro‑mechanical assemblies from technical drawings.
- Operate conventional manual and CNC lathes, milling machines, welding equipment and other workshop machinery.
- Perform electro‑mechanical construction, wiring, installation, servicing, and maintenance of equipment both in the workshop and at remote field sites.
- Support procurement activities and maintain accurate workshop records and documentation.
- Relevant technical qualification (BTEC Level3–7) or equivalent experience.
- Strong understanding of materials, mechanical engineering principles, and engineering tolerances, limits, and fits, applicable to a practical workshop environment.
- Hands‑on experience working in a machine shop, ideally with modern or time‑served apprenticeship.
- Interest in the integration of mechanics and electronics, with a focus on mechatronics and emerging engineering technologies.
- Experience building and fault‑finding electro‑mechanical assemblies, such as sensor wiring and circuit diagnostics.
- Practical mindset: precision, continuous improvement, solutions‑focused.
- Collaborative and positive engineering culture; strong communication skills.
- Well‑organised, proactive, able to manage time across varied tasks.
- Solid understanding of workshop health and safety practices.
- Full UK manual driving licence; comfortable working outdoors and traveling across the UK, including occasional overnight stays.
- Apprenticeship or advanced experience in CNC machining.
- Interest in sensors, instrumentation, electronics, IoT technologies.
- Experience with 3D printing for prototyping.
- Awareness of quality systems such as ISO
9001. - Experience with Raspberry Pi and/or Arduino.
