Maintainer ; Distribution

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of the Town’s potable water transmission and distribution system, including pipelines and appurtenances such as water services, fire hydrants, valves, water meters and related equipment of the Water Division. These tasks may include, but are not limited to, digging, back filling, cleaning, loading, unloading, mixing cement, carrying tools and materials, cutting brush, painting, jack hammering, and operating and maintaining vehicles and small equipment.

Assists with special projects, and performs maintenance of buildings and grounds, and all other work necessary to maintain and improve the Town’s water transmission and distribution system, and facilities. Performs all work in a safe, efficient manner including, but not limited to, trenching and shoring activities, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Completes other related duties as assigned.

May be subject to emergency calls and scheduled overtime work as assigned.

Considerable physical stamina to work under arduous conditions; ability to exercise good judgment; some knowledge of the use and care of basic tools and equipment; basic knowledge of safety standards, procedures and regulations related to assigned work; ability to operate vehicles and light trucks of the Water Division and other power operated mechanical equipment; ability to work independently or as part of a crew on an assigned task;

good ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow Water Division employees, other municipal employees and the general public; good ability and aptitude to understand and follow clear and concise written and oral instructions.

High school diploma, trade school diploma, or high school equivalency diploma. One (1) years’ experience in plumbing or as a Maintainer/Laborer for a water utility or in the construction field is preferred.

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license.
