Position: Northern California Business Development Leader (Water Business Group)

Working in partnership with the Northern California Water Business Group (WBG) Management, the Bay Area Water Client Development Leader is responsible for strategically developing and directing business development opportunities for clients requiring drinking water, wastewater and water resources planning and design consulting services throughout northern California, focusing on opportunities and clients in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition, work with all Business Groups in Northern California to create a strategy to drive the BGX initiatives to bring more of HDR to our clients.

Duties include maintaining and expanding existing client relationships; identifying, establishing, and nurturing relationships with new target clients; developing market networks; positioning the firm for project pursuits that result in client selection; and leading technical teams in proposal and interview preparation.

In the role of Northern California Business Development Leader
, we’ll count on you to:

  • In partnership with program and operations leadership, develop and implement annual plans including strategic goals and objectives that align with meeting financial net fees booked (NFB) goals.
  • Analyze and qualify potential clients that align with professional and financial value to the firm. Identify contact and assist in building relationships with key decision makers of targeted clients.
  • Partner with Business Group Manager, Market Sector Leaders, Area Managers, Project Managers, and other leaders within the firm in the pursuit of new opportunities.
  • Maintain business development data and information in HDR’s business systems and tools.
  • Coordinate activities with other Client Development Leaders, Market Sector Leaders, and project teams to leverage relationships and project experiences for building the program.
  • Work directly with marketing services in the preparation of collateral materials such as statements of qualification, proposals, interview presentations, specialty brochures, and other marketing information promoting the program.
  • Working in collaboration with pursuit teams develop and implement successful proposal and interview strategies and content resulting in shortlisting and selection.
  • Coordinate and participate in industry conferences, seminars, professional associations, and other external organizations to develop business contacts, promote HDR and engage potential clients and partner firms.
  • Maintain client relationships and support project delivery by serving as Project Principal or Project Manager for key clients.

    Monitor client satisfaction and leverage successes for other project opportunities. Seek and create opportunities to mentor mid- and junior-level staff.
  • Develop business relationships with team partners.
  • Implement go/no-go decision process in accordance with HDR’s Matrix of Authority.
  • Train and mentor employees on business development and marketing best practices.
  • Understand and apply HDR’s risk management approach when pursuing new business opportunities.
  • Actively participate in professional associations to elevate HDR’s brand in target markets.
  • Project assignments will vary depending on the skill of the actual candidate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a professional, engineering, or related field
  • Maintain a professional or engineering registration or certificate or have related technical experience
  • Proven business development success in the water consulting industry
  • Existing network of local clients is beneficial
