The Associate Engineer II is a licensed professional engineer responsible for managing and performing complex engineering work on a variety of public works, utility, and infrastructure projects. Working under general direction, this position applies sound professional judgment and advanced technical knowledge to deliver high-quality designs and oversee project execution. The Associate Engineer II often leads project teams, coordinates with consultants and contractors, and ensures that all work meets applicable standards, schedules, and budgets.
ESSENTIALDUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs, and changing business practices.
Depending on the area of assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Lead and manage the technical performance of small to medium-sized projects and assigned components of larger, more complex projects.
- Develop and review engineering designs, specifications, estimates, and reports to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with established standards.
- Exercise independent judgment to modify or adapt standard engineering practices for unique or challenging project conditions.
- Direct, coordinate, and review the work of assigned engineers, technicians, and consultants.
- Oversee project budgets, schedules, and deliverables; ensure that milestones are achieved and documentation is complete.
- Conduct field inspections, evaluate site conditions, and resolve technical issues that arise during construction.
- Review and process design submittals, change orders, and contractor payment requests.
- Prepare and present project reports, recommendations, and technical analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
- Performs other functions as assigned.
Experience
5 to 10 years of professional engineering experience and a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or a related field.
License/Certificate
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of California
Insurance/Vehicle Registration
Possession of appropriate and current vehicle insurance and registration.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of
- Comprehensive principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to complex public works, infrastructure, and development projects.
- Advanced methods and techniques of engineering design, analysis, and project management.
- Applicable local, state, and federal codes, standards, and regulations related to construction and design.
- Principles of contract administration, budgeting, cost estimation, and scheduling.
- Current construction methods, materials, and inspection procedures for public infrastructure.
- Engineering software applications including AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, spreadsheets, and project management tools.
- Techniques for technical report writing and presentation to internal and external audiences.
Ability to
- Independently plan, organize, and manage engineering projects of moderate to high complexity.
- Evaluate design alternatives and make sound, data-driven recommendations.
- Interpret and apply regulations, standards, and technical requirements to project work.
- Coordinate and balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
- Prepare clear, accurate, and professional reports and correspondence.
- Build cooperative relationships with staff, consultants, and community partners.
- Represent the department professionally in meetings, presentations, and public forums.
