Role

Purpose:

The Hindu Religious Worker will assist the temple in conducting traditional Hindu religious worship, ceremonies, rituals and related religious tasks. The position is mostly non-pastoral and includes conducting daily temple worship and Vedic rites according to the established Hindu customs and temple procedures.

The postholder would be expected to have practical knowledge and experience in Hindu priestly responsibilities, Sanskrit mantras, Vedic chanting, puja procedures and traditional religious observances.

Main Responsibilities and Duties.

Perform daily temple puja, devotion and religious rites to the temple deities.

Perform the daily Aarti at the stipulated times and help with the arrangement of the shrine, lamps, offerings, flowers and other religious articles.

Perform Homam and Havan rites as per Hindu and Vedic traditions.

Perform Rudra Abhishekam with the necessary preparation, chanting of Sanskrit, offering and ritual processes.

Recitation and chanting of Rudram, Chamakam and other Vedic mantras during temple worship and festivals.

Perform Abhishekam and Alankaram for the deities in the temple as per the religious rituals prescribed.

Perform daily worship and rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna and other Hindu deities worshipped at the temple.

Show suitable understanding of Krishna worship customs and applicable Vedic and Sanskrit prayers

Chant and conduct rituals based on mantras and procedures as found in the Yajur Veda and corresponding Hindu scriptures and ritual traditions.

Arrange religious articles needed for puja, homam, Abhishekam and other functions.

Keep the Garbhagriha, the altar and other specified religious locations of the temple sacred and clean.

Daily preparation of deities for worship involving bathing, dressing, adornment and offering of flowers and Prasad.

Perform religious rites related to Hindu festivals, holy days, and special temple activities.

Assist in rituals such as Ganesh Puja, Navratri devotion, Diwali, Shivaratri, Janmashtami and other temple holidays.

Recite Sankalpam and other relevant prayers for the devotees who are participating in the temple ceremonies.

Assist other approved temple priests in major religious rites and celebrations.

Offer and distribute Prasad after religious rites.

Maintain proper standards of religious behaviour and discipline and attire while performing priestly functions.

Observe the religious customs, procedures and directions for worship and ritual practice in the temple.

Help prepare the temple for important festivals, religious observances and special rituals.

Required Knowledge and Skills

The successful candidate will have:

Practical work experience as a Hindu priest or religious worker.

Familiarity with Hindu puja rites and conventional temple worship.

Capable of doing Aarti daily on his own.

Experience in performing Homam and Havan.

Experience in conducting Rudra Abhishekam.

Rudram and other associated Vedic chanting knowledge.

Knowledge of the religious mantras and prayers of Sanskrit.

Knowledge of Krishna Yajur Veda Mantras and ritual activities pertaining to Temple worship.

Knowledge about the worship methods of Shiva, Durga, Krishna and other Hindu deities.

Understanding of Hindu festivals, religious calendar and cultural observances.

Careful preparation and handling of traditional religious artefacts and offerings.

Ability to work respectfully with other priests, temple trustees, volunteers, and devotees.
