Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Public Safety and the Duty Shift Sergeant, the University Police Officer I will patrol university buildings, grounds, and adjacent areas and enforce the Commonwealth of Massachusetts laws and University regulations. The role projects an image of helpful community service to promote campus security and crime prevention.
The hourly rate for this position is $32.62 and it is a 40‑hour work week.
Key Responsibilities- Patrol university buildings, grounds and adjacent areas at regular intervals to protect the campus from trespassers, thefts, damage or injury to persons and property.
- Inspect interior and exterior of all university buildings; extinguish unnecessary lights; secure exterior doors; lock offices, laboratories and related rooms that are found unlocked (unless otherwise requested). Report all irregularities to appropriate authorities.
- Respond immediately to all intrusion/fire alarms; investigate causes, perform related follow‑up as dictated by circumstances and outlined fire‑alarm response procedures.
- Exercise police powers to detect and apprehend law violators, investigate complaints and refer to appropriate supervisory personnel, and prepare detailed written investigative reports for all incidents occurring during patrol.
- Enforce university vehicle parking and traffic regulations; investigate vehicular accidents and provide required documentation; control vehicular and pedestrian traffic entering/exiting campus; exclude unauthorized and undesirable parties from campus properties.
- May perform overtime campus police detail duties during university social/athletic functions; provide emergency or courtesy transportation for students, faculty and staff.
- When assigned to dispatch duty, acknowledge all incoming personal visit/telephone reports at the communications center, handle inquiries, dispatch patrol cars, control UHF communications network, monitor alarms and CCTV, and dispatch patrol cars for appropriate action.
- Associate’s degree required with up to 2 years of related work experience.
- MA state driver’s license required and must obtain and retain a Massachusetts Class A license to carry a firearm.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Successful completion of the Commonwealth P.O.S.T certified academy.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Successful completion of medical/physical exam and drug/alcohol testing with no restrictions.
- Successful completion of pre‑employment psychological examination by an independent qualified psychologist.
Hourly rate: $32.62
. Pay ranges are a good faith estimate; final compensation will be based on scope of responsibilities, experience, education, internal equity and applicable legal requirements.
