Consultant Spinal Surgeon; SI in Paediatric Spine & Trauma

The Department of Neurosurgery at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Spinal Surgeon with a special interest in Paediatric Spine and Trauma
. This is a key role within a high‑performing expanding spinal service, supporting the delivery of complex, high‑value care for children with spinal deformities and trauma.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team within one of the UK’s busiest neurosurgical units, contributing to elective and emergency spinal surgery, MDTs, training, and service development. The role supports the Trust’s specialist spinal services and plays a vital part in reducing waiting times and improving outcomes for a vulnerable patient group.

• The post is based in the Atkinson Morley Wing of St George's Hospital, with no additional off‑site working currently.
• The post‑holder will run a weekly outpatient clinic and manage inpatients under their care.
• The post‑holder will participate in the combined Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Spinal Service 1 in 9.
• The post‑holder will maintain continuous professional development and complete annual appraisal and revalidation.
• On‑call supplement is 3%.
• The post holder may be invited to carry out elective activity at the weekend alongside other members of the department; weekend working can be arranged by mutual agreement.

• Postgraduate medical qualification in FRCS(ORTH) or FRCS(NS)

• Paediatric spinal deformity training and experience
• Adult spinal deformity training and experience
• Training in endoscopic spinal surgery
• Ability to lead service development in endoscopic day‑case spinal surgery for high‑volume low‑complexity spinal surgery
• Experience in anterior spinal surgery
• Formal fellowship (post‑FRCS) in spinal surgery in a centre of excellence

• Ability to organise and manage out‑patient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists
• Evidence of governance activity and commitment

• Experience supervising F1–ST8
• Ability to teach clinical and operative skills
• Ability to supervise postgraduate research
