Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist - Avalon Ward

We are seeking an experienced Clinical / Counselling Psychologist (HCPC registered) or CBT therapist (BABCP accredited) who is enthusiastic and passionate about working with a range of clients, many of whom are difficult to engage. The postholder will work with clients presenting with an eating disorder and frequently other comorbidities, providing specialist assessment, formulation and treatment in a collaborative and individualised manner within evidence‑based treatment models for eating disorders.

Ideally, postholders will have experience within a specialist eating disorders service and with clients who have complex presentations. This fixed‑term role runs until the end of February 2027 at part‑time, requiring a minimum of 2 days working in‑person at our main hospital base Springfield (SW17 0YE). Primary therapy modalities are CBT and MANTRA, with scope to incorporate other models such as CFT, DBT & CRT.

The postholder will offer psychological assessment, formulation and therapy to individuals and groups, and contribute to teaching, supervision, service development, research and audit.

We welcome clinicians who are newly qualified and who may not meet the criteria for Band 8a, as this post could be adjusted to suit someone at Band 7 level.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide a qualified clinical/counselling psychology / CBT therapy service to clients of the inpatient Adult Eating Disorders ward.
  • Deliver highly specialist psychological assessment and therapy, while advising on clients' psychological care to non‑psychologist colleagues and non‑professional carers.
  • Work autonomously within professional guidelines and the team's policies and procedures.
  • Utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service.
Job responsibilities
  • Provide specialist psychological assessments of patients referred to the ward, integrating complex data from tests, self‑report measures, rating scales, observations and semi‑structured interviews.
  • Formulate and implement plans for formal psychological treatment and/or management of clients' mental health problems.
  • Implement a range of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, adjusting as needed.
  • Evaluate and decide on treatment options considering theoretical, therapeutic models and individual factors.
  • Exercise autonomous professional responsibility for assessment, treatment and discharge of clients.
  • Provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals both within the outpatient team and other eating disorder service teams/ adult mental health teams.
  • Contribute to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care across all settings and agencies serving the client group.
  • Undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and advise on psychological aspects of risk.
  • Communicate information concerning assessment, formulation and treatment plans in a skilled and sensitive manner, and monitor progress during multidisciplinary care.
  • Person Specification Training & Qualifications
    • Successful completion of post‑graduate doctoral level training in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (or equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS before July 2009, or approved by the HCPC from July 2009, or completion of BABCP approved cognitive behaviour therapy training.
    • Registered with the HCPC as a practitioner psychologist or with the BABCP as a Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapist in CBT.
    • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the HCPC / BABCP.
    • Pre‑qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
    • Advanced training in Behavioural Cognitive Psychotherapy.
    Experience
    • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across all care settings.
    • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups across the life course, managing highly emotive and distressing problems.
