Fabricator Welder
MERC, a research institute of Mercer University, offers high-quality engineering and technical support services. The Fabricator Welder supports engineers in mechanical fabrication and prototyping, performing complex, non-repetitive weldment assemblies, fixtures, and custom components under the supervision of the mechanical chief engineer.
Responsibilities- Read and interpret technical data packages.
- Set up and operate hand and power welding tools such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
- Monitor fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating, warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
- Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies before assembly to meet technical data package requirements.
- Adhere to safety standards and use protective equipment.
- Perform tasks with precision and attention to detail.
- Measure and cut materials to specifications.
- Verify finished work meets tolerances indicated on prints.
- Maintain equipment in safe condition.
- Keep work area clean and organized.
- Communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
- Execute a wide variety of welding processes on various metal types.
- Support prototype development, working with engineers on feasibility of prototype parts.
- Recommend welding methods or processes to improve productivity and quality.
- Fabricate weldment assemblies and fixtures from blueprints, sketches, CAD models, engineering drawings, and verbal instructions.
- Calculate and layout jigs and fixtures to maintain dimensions during assembly.
- Apply knowledge of welding characteristics for aluminum, steel, copper, brass, and other metals.
- Perform related fabrication work such as cutting, bending, forming, beveling, and notching.
- Inspect work for conformance using precision instruments like micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, and other gauges.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.
- Well‑rounded knowledge of fabrication and assembly techniques, tools, equipment, materials, and shop practices.
- High school diploma or GED plus technical certifications in the relevant area.
- Other requirements may be added as specified in the Personnel Requisition Form.
