Outpatient Mental Health Therapist II – Akron Children’s
Earn a $20,000 sign‑on bonus (taxed) paid with the first paycheck. First shift: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday to Friday.
Location:
Warren/Harding Primary Care – ages 5‑18.
The Mental Health Therapist II will apply graduate‑level counseling skills and social work as an independently licensed staff member, as stipulated by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. Duties include psychosocial assessment of individuals, adolescents, families, and groups and the provision of graduate‑level clinical social work/counseling interventions appropriate to client needs.
Responsibilities- Conduct initial comprehensive patient and family psychosocial assessment, and triage care accordingly.
- Communicate with staff regarding assessment, treatment/interventions, and interdisciplinary care plan through documentation and meetings such as patient rounds.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide competent care for the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age.
- Provide case management for assigned patients that involves consultation and collaboration with hospital and community professionals and programs to provide the most appropriate and comprehensive care.
- Consistently use evidence‑based trauma and risk assessment tools and apply crisis intervention skills when indicated, and formally determine the need for a referral to the Emergency Department or a more suitable community agency.
- Complete ethical and timely documentation as expected in the context of the department.

- Complete Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) interventions in addition to other clinical evidence‑based treatment modalities to assist patients and families in completing their individualized service plans.
- Use of CBT and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) interventions through individual, group, and family therapy to support clients in achieving therapeutic goals.
- Work in a fast‑paced environment conducting risk assessments and using crisis intervention skills as needed.
- Triage and assess intake calls from families and community referral sources. Conduct preliminary diagnostic assessment over telephone to evaluate need for services.
- Conduct comprehensive risk assessment face‑to‑face in the ED or through telehealth to maximize continuity of care with the family.
- Engage in consultation and collaboration with hospital and community professionals to develop and communicate a crisis treatment plan for patients and families and provide recommendations for follow‑up.
- Use CBT and other evidence‑based practices such as Motivational Interviewing.
- Involve family in therapy sessions and provide behavior modification techniques as clinically indicated.
- Experience working with electronic medical record software such as EPIC is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
- Experience providing clinical services through telehealth is preferred.
- Education:
Master’s Degree in Social Work or Clinical Mental/Behavioral Health Counseling (required). - Certification:
Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or Licensed Independent Marriage and Family Therapist (IMFT) required. For SUD positions, LCDC II, LCDC III, or LICDC preferred. - Years of relevant experience:
Minimum 3–5 years (preferred). - Supervision endorsement from the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board preferred.
- Must meet Akron Children’s Hospital Medical Staff Credentialing/Privileging criteria.
