Job Overview
Chaplain I Mission/Pastoral Care (PRN) at Bon Secours Mercy Health in Warren, OH. Under the direction of the Director of Mission or Director of Spiritual Care, the Chaplain ministers to patients, families, and staff around religious and spiritual needs. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the Chaplain provides spiritual care and emotional support within the context of illness, crisis, loss, and death.

- Recognizes the sacramental needs of the Catholic population.
- Provide religious and ritual needs of diverse faith groups.
- Minister to a diverse population in a non‑proselytizing manner and provide basic emotional and spiritual support to patients, visitors, community, and associates.
- Provide constructive pastoral presence using pastoral skills including active listening and calm communication.
- Provide spiritual support in end‑of‑life situations and crises (Code Blue, death, trauma, etc.).
- Identify pastoral situations that require additional resources and request appropriate assistance.
- Makes notation of clinical encounters in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) per departmental protocol.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the Ethical and Religious Directives of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and adheres to the policies of Bon Secours Mercy Health as a Catholic health‑care organization.
- Available 24/7 via call with expectations for holidays and weekends.
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Religious or Theological Studies.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- 1 year related experience as a Chaplain in a health‑care setting required.
- Completion of lay ministry or ordination process required.
- Documentation of faith community endorsement by an official representative required.
- Commitment to complete one (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) within the first year of employment.
- One (1) unit of CPE completed is preferred.
- Certification and licensing per institutional policy.
- Experience with diverse populations and interfaith dialogue.
- Demonstrated skills in crisis counseling, pastoral care, and ethical practice.
