Summary of Primary FunctionThe Registered Nurse in Medical/Surgical practice serves as a core member of a multidisciplinary care team. The RN delivers patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. RN responsibilities include providing culturally competent care, effective time management, contributing to quality improvement initiatives, collaborating with other disciplines, and supporting the mission of the ministry to give physical and psychological support to patients and families.
EssentialJob Functions
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to establish goals and strategies for discharge or continuing care needs.
- Performs and documents complete patient assessments; initiates and maintains nursing care plans for all assigned patients.
- Identifies patient learning needs and provides individualized and comprehensive teaching.
- Administers medications safely in accordance with state regulations and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies.
- Acts as a point of contact for patients’ care coordination across hospital departments.
- Advocates for patient safety through ongoing quality improvement and quality‑safety initiatives.
- Collaborates with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics for patient advocacy.

Licensing/Certification- Current RN license in the state of practice or covered by compact (required)
- BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire; must be completed before direct patient care)
- Medical‑Surgical Nursing Certification RN‑BC (preferred)
- CCRN – Critical Care Registered Nurse (preferred)
- PCCN – Progressive Care Certified Nurse (preferred)
- CMSRN – Certified Medical‑Surgical Registered Nurse (preferred)
- NIH Stroke Certification (preferred)
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).
Experience- One year of RN experience (required)
- Six months RN experience in an acute‑care hospital setting (preferred)
- Assign patient care according to skill, knowledge, and scope of practice.
- Orient, facilitate learning, and provide education to nursing staff and others.
- Possess clinical knowledge, skills, and competency to provide evidence‑based patient care.
- Perform comprehensive assessments of patients’ clinical and psychosocial needs.
- Safely and efficiently develop, implement, and prioritize plan of care.
- Apply nursing process in patient care delivery.
- Assess patient responses to treatment to evaluate effectiveness; revise plan of care accordingly.
- Assist patients and families in coping with illness.
- Collaborate with others in coordinated patient care.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Apply cultural diversity and inclusion principles in care.
- Seek assistance and acquire information to perform safely.
- Engage in professional growth through educational programs and literature.
