Summary of Primary FunctionThe Obstetrics (OB) Registered Nurse (RN) addresses the care provided to healthcare consumers in the context of women-, newborn-, and family-centered care, including those who do not self-identify as women or exclusively as women, as well as all people parenting newborns. The RN provides, coordinates, plans and evaluates nursing care and supervises licensed and unlicensed associates in nursing care delivery within established procedures, professional standards and organizational policies.
This RN demonstrates the ability to care for patients in the outpatient and/or acute obstetrical setting as part of an interprofessional team focused on achieving the best individual maternal, neonatal, gynecology and women's health outcomes.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team (including Care Management, transfer centers, and pharmacies) to conduct initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyze assessment data, create a place of care, educate patient and/or family, implement nursing care/interventions, evaluate their effectiveness, and advocate for the patient/family.
- Provide episodic (outpatient) and inpatient obstetrical/Women's Health nursing care where applicable.
- Administer medications safely consistent with the State of Practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health protocols, coordinating care within hospital departments.
- Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement in the department.
- Apply knowledge of contemporary obstetrical/women's health nursing practice and future innovations.
- Use the nursing process in the care of women during pregnancy, birth, postpartum, gynecological and other women's health issues and the neonate from birth until discharge with differing gestational ages, diagnoses, and complications.
- Provide care to women of all ages requiring triage, prioritization, assessment, education, stabilization, resuscitation, and emergency management.
- Model core cultural and safety behaviors to eliminate preventable harm, ensure worker safety, and provide a safe high-quality experience of care.
- Practice and deliver care in accordance with the core concepts and intention of the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.
- Current RN license in the state of employment or covered by the nursing compact (required).
- BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire; must be obtained before direct patient care; ACLS acceptable in lieu of BLS).
- NRP Neonatal Resuscitation Program (preferred at hire; must be obtained within 3 months).
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification – National Certification Corporation (preferred if interpreting fetal monitoring).
- Inpatient OB Certification – National Certification Corporation (preferred).
- Maternal Newborn Nursing Certification – National Certification Corporation (preferred).
- Neonatal Intensive Care Certification – National Certification Corporation (required for critical care transport NICU teams within 2 years).
- Low Risk Neonatal Nursing Certification – National Certification Corporation (preferred).
- Care of the Extremely Low Birth Weight Neonate Certification – National Certification Corporation (preferred).
Preferably Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Work Experience1 year of RN experience (required).
Recent OB, ED or Critical Care ExperiencePreferred.
TrainingEpic Electronic Health Record (preferred).
Skills- Assign patient care according to the nursing skill, knowledge and scope of practice of staff.
- Orient, facilitate learning experience and provide education to nursing staff and others based on quality improvement indicators.
- Possess clinical knowledge, skills and competency to provide evidence-based patient care in accordance with current standards of practice, policy and procedure and the BSMH mission.
