Position: Civil Engineer 3

Introduction

GAI Consultants offers a career‑building opportunity for a Civil Engineer 3 within our Power Business Unit’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Business Sector. This position may be based out of any GAI office location or fully remote, and is a fast‑paced, team‑oriented role with tremendous growth prospects in the Pittsburgh, PA region.

Job Duties
  • Plan, design, and facilitate civil engineering project design tasks such as site grading and drainage design, access road design, erosion and sediment pollution control design, stormwater management design, report preparation, and permitting.
  • Perform technical and feasibility studies.
  • Collaborate with other professionals and discuss requirements with team members.
  • Use computer programs to develop detailed designs.
  • Ensure that work products meet client, environmental, and safety requirements.
  • Perform work with minimal guidance and supervision.
  • Handle complex issues and refer only the most complex issues to more experienced staff.
  • Apply strong working knowledge of civil engineering design tasks and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Possess strong knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and analysis modules.
  • Perform moderately complex civil design tasks while delegating routine tasks to staff with less experience.
  • Mentor, guide, and check the work of less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrate strong team collaboration, oral and written communication, design expertise, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Adhere to safety and quality procedures of GAI and our clients.
  • Travel occasionally (5%-10% of the time) to other offices, meet clients, and attend project‑specific meetings.
General Characteristics
  • Apply broad knowledge of principles and practices in a specific practice area.
  • Independently evaluate, select, and adapt standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Lead tasks and projects of moderately complex scopes.
  • Develop plans, specifications, and other project documents.
  • Select appropriate principles of engineering economics, probability, and statistics to analyze risk in complex engineering problems.
Experience Required

8+ years of relevant experience.

Education

B.S. or M.S. in Engineering.

Licensing & Certification

Professional Engineer (P.E.) license with reciprocity in multiple states.

Technical Responsibilities
  • Assign tasks to technical and non‑technical staff, predominantly planning and coordinating detailed engineering work.
  • Prepare scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
  • Assist with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects.
Management Responsibility
  • Receive supervision and guidance on overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters.
  • Receive direction on unusual conditions and developments.
  • Mentor direct reports and other engineers.
  • Demonstrate professional attitudes relevant to engineering practice, including creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and dependability.
Communication Skills
  • Possess advanced oral and written communication skills, including interpretation of complex technical and contractual language.
  • Consider the needs of diverse project stakeholders.
  • Lead project meetings and represent the organization in communications concerning broad engineering assignments.
  • Analyze and select principles of formal communication, effective teamwork, and pathways to developing leadership.
