Overview
This position ensures the safety of patrons in the aquatics area both in and around the pool. Those fulfilling the requirements and certifications for this position are expected to respond to emergencies throughout the facility.
Level is dependent on employee meeting Level I, II, or III experience requirements.
Responsibilities Lifeguard, Level I duties- Pool Surveillance: Maintains constant surveillance of patrons. Acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency. Adheres to and enforces rules in all pools. Rotates in a timely manner with other members of the guard staff.
- Rescues and First Aid: Acts immediately and appropriately during emergencies up to the standards outlined by the American Red Cross. Provides emergency care when needed until Emergency Medical Services takes over. Provides first aid care to patrons who need it. Follows up any emergency care or first aid with a detailed incident report. Becomes familiar with the Department and Facility EAPs.
- Cleaning Duties: Performs hourly checks of the locker rooms and pool decks to ensure that the facility’s lower level is clean and safe for public use. Performs daily cleaning tasks such as cleaning the stainless steel around the pool, power washing the pool deck, etc. Performs opening and closing duties.
- Training Duties: Attends monthly in-services that are run by the Headguards. Successfully completes monthly lifeguarding audits while in the stand.
- Customer Service: Helps patrons get fitted with life jackets as needed. Escorts external coaches to the storage closet to retrieve their equipment. Stays informed on departmental updates to better inform patrons.
- Additional Tasks: Assists with departmental events and the yearly shutdown, as needed. Assists as needed under the instruction of the Aquatics Supervisor or Headguard as needed.
- Rescues and First Aid: Oversees the aquatic team on duty in providing emergency care and treatment and assists as needed. Ensures that the incident reports are completed.
- Training Duties: Completes monthly fit swims. Executes audits for the lifeguards to complete. If LGI certified, assists the Aquatics Supervisor in running the monthly in-services. Attends monthly Headguard meetings.
- Supervisory Duties: Assists the Aquatics Supervisor in the supervision of the lifeguard staff. Delegates hourly and weekly cleaning tasks to on-duty lifeguards. Notes anything of importance in shift reports. Uses the department’s recreation management software to check the pool schedule for the day.
- Chemical Checks: Checks the chemicals periodically at scheduled intervals to ensure the safety of patrons. Notifies the Aquatics Supervisor immediately if chemicals are out of range.
- Customer Service: Assists guards with explanations of rules. Ensures that lane reservations are posted for patrons to see.
- Additional Tasks: Completes weekly Headguard task and records it in shift report.
- Pump Room Duties: Assists the Aquatics Supervisor in ensuring that the pools are properly balanced by adding the proper dosage of chemicals and backwashing the pool when instructed to by the Aquatics Supervisor. Assists in miscellaneous tasks that require a CPO under the instruction of the Aquatics Supervisor and Building Engineer.

- Knowledge of the department’s Emergency Action Plan
- Knowledge of principals of governmental organization and administration.
- Knowledge of the lifeguarding standards set by the American Red Cross.
- Proficient swimming ability.
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public, employees, Town Officials and others involved in performance of job duties; ability to assemble reports in a concise, clear and effective manner.
