The salary range for this position is $36.50–$58.40 hourly. Placement within the salary range depends on factors such as relevant work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement is guided by the rules outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.

Description

The Ambulatory Surgery Staff RN reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and regulatory and accreditation standards. The RN is a clinically competent, computer literate, registered professional nurse who interviews surgical patients in person and via phone, prescribes, delegates, and coordinates nursing care to the acutely ill patient through assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation.

This role effectively interacts with patients, significant others, and other health team members while maintaining ANA standards of professional nursing practice. The RN works approximately 30 hrs per week.

Responsibilities
  • Interview surgical patients, coordinate patient care, and clear charts for surgery.
  • Require strong clinical knowledge and ability to develop a patient care plan in preparation for surgery.
  • Follow the nursing process: assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Perform all aspects of patient care to optimize safety and reduce medical or health‑care errors incorporating National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Work collaboratively with anesthesia to clear patients for surgery.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, ancillary support services, office staff, and nursing units.
  • Demonstrate persistence and follow‑up work as needed.
  • Solve problems effectively yet tactfully and non‑confrontationally.
  • Use results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice and the healthcare delivery system.
  • Review pre‑op instructions for all patients scheduled for next‑day surgery and obtain necessary documentation and supplies as documented.
  • Provide patient comfort and safety using appropriate equipment and/or medication, as documented and reported through patient surveys.
  • Maintain records and log books as required by policy and regulation.
  • Assign pre‑operative arrival times and notify patients at least 1 day in advance of the surgery, as documented.
  • Check pre‑op charts for completion and obtain appropriate paperwork to complete charts as documented.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (required for all new hires as of 5/2014).
  • Basic Life Support Certification.
  • PALS and ACLS within 6 months of hire date.
  • Current State of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse Licensure.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with electronic medical record systems.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and basic surgical procedures.
  • Effective time management and ability to work independently.
  • Organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Problem‑solving ability.
  • Strong critical‑thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and respond appropriately.
  • Prior Epic experience.
  • Triage, critical care, ED, or surgical patient experience.
