The Assistant Quantity Surveyor will support the commercial management of water infrastructure projects delivered under the Affinity Water framework. Working closely with the commercial and operational teams, the role is focused on assisting with cost control, contract administration, and financial reporting while gaining exposure to all aspects of project commercial delivery within the utilities sector.
Key Responsibilities- Commercial Support:
Assist in the preparation of applications for payment and supporting documentation. Support cost capture, allocation, and tracking across multiple projects. Contribute to cost value reconciliation (CVR) processes and reporting. - Contract Administration:
Assist in administering contracts (NEC or similar), ensuring compliance with contract requirements. Support the identification and preparation of compensation events and variations. Maintain accurate commercial records and documentation. - Procurement & Supply Chain:
Assist in the procurement process for subcontractors and suppliers. Support the preparation of subcontract orders and documentation. Help manage subcontractor accounts, including valuations and payments. - Cost Control & Reporting:
Assist with budget monitoring, forecasting, and cost reporting. Track project costs and highlight variances, risks, and opportunities. Help prepare monthly financial reports and performance summaries. - Stakeholder Engagement:
Work collaboratively with site teams, engineers, and project managers. Support communication with Affinity Water representatives and supply chain partners. Develop strong working relationships across project teams. - Risk & Compliance:
Support identification of commercial risks and assist in mitigation actions. Ensure company procedures and governance are followed. Maintain organised and auditable commercial records.
- Some experience in a commercial, construction, or utilities environment (placement or graduate role acceptable).
- Basic understanding of quantity surveying principles and cost management.
- Awareness of NEC contracts (desirable but not essential).
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Competent in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Degree qualified or working towards a degree in Quantity Surveying or related discipline.
- Desire to work towards professional accreditation (RICS/CICES).
- Eager to learn and develop within a commercial role.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proactive and willing to take initiative.
- Team-oriented with a positive attitude.
