Lead Paediatric Dentist – Complex Care & Sedation

Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry

North Cheshire and Mersey NHS Foundation Trust (BCH) is seeking two specialists in paediatric dentistry, one based in Cheshire and Merseyside and the other in Greater Manchester.

The primary purpose of these positions is to act as clinical lead for paediatric dentistry across the Trust's network, provide specialist dental services for children with complex needs, and support the development of paediatric sedation and behaviour management.

Clinical

• Comply with paediatric dentistry contract requirements and deliver specialist care to children who cannot receive routine treatment because of physical, developmental, medical, emotional, sensory, mental or social impairments.
• Accept referrals of complex cases from other dentists, including salaried dentists.
• Conduct patient management techniques, including inhalation sedation, and develop advanced sedation methods.
• Work with senior salaried dentists and the Clinical Director to plan services for children requiring specialist care.
• Lead or participate in clinical audit, peer review and continuing professional development activities.

Communication

• Communicate effectively with patients, carers, families and user groups regarding complex clinical issues.
• Engage with clinical teams, peers, other health and social care professionals, operational managers and corporate services.
• Represent the Trust at external and internal clinical networks.
• Provide advice on legislative framework (e.g., GDC standards) and specialist registration.
• Support governance meetings, including audit and dental clinical governance.

Professionalism

• Advise colleagues and managers on ethical issues and GDC guidance.
• Participate in and lead appraisal, peer review, clinical audit and CPD activities.
• Maintain exemplary standards of conduct and behaviour.

• Name appearing on the specialist list in paediatric dentistry

• Working at Band B or C in a clinical role.
• Providing clinical leadership in your area of expertise.
• Leading clinical audit and quality governance.
• Formal leadership training.
• Publication in a peer‑reviewed journal.
• Research experience.
• Human factors awareness.
• Case investigator background.

• Ability to travel independently across the Trust.
• Flexibility to work according to service needs.

• Familiarity with digital tools relevant to dentistry at the Trust.
