Originally named, Great British Nuclear, Great British Energy Nuclear is an arm’s length body of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, dedicated to supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear technologies in Great Britain. We play acrucial role in advancing nuclear new build, ensuring the UK’s energy security and achieving net‑zero carbon emissions. Great British Energy – Nuclear focuses on fostering innovation, facilitating investment, and coordinating efforts across the nuclear industry to build a resilient and sustainable energy future.

Great British Energy – Nuclear’s first step was to start the technology selection process for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in 2023. SMRs can potentially be quicker to deploy and less expensive to build than traditional nuclear power plants because they are smaller, have factory‑based modular manufacturing and more flexible deployment options. In June 2025, Great British Energy – Nuclear announced that Rolls‑Royce SMR had been selected as the preferred bidder to build the UK’s first SMRs, following a technology selection process that began in 2023.

The Senior Project Manager will play a critical role in supporting the delivery of new digital and technology solutions required by the SMR Programme. Operating within a highly regulated environment, the postholder will lead complex projects, contribute to the review and transformation of the current technical infrastructure, and collaborate widely across departments to assess existing corporate solutions. They will provide evidence‑based recommendations and cases for change to Executive and Programme leadership, ensuring that technology decisions support programme priorities, organisational goals, and long‑term digital maturity.

• Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of large-scale digital and technology projects underpinning the SMR Programme.
• Manage scope, timelines, interdependencies, and risks to ensure successful outcomes.
• Maintain robust project governance, reporting, and decision‑making structures.
• Produce high‑quality project documentation including RAID logs, plans, steering packs, and business cases.

• Support the Programme review of current technical infrastructure, identifying gaps, constraints, and opportunities for modernisation.
• Work with Digital, IT, and cross‑departmental teams to evaluate existing corporate solutions and determine suitability for future programme needs.
• Develop clear, data‑driven recommendations and cases for change, presenting findings to Executive and Programme leads.

• Manage the delivery of cloud‑based services, modern IT solutions, and digital capabilities required by the SMR Programme.
• Oversee implementation of services such as M365, Azure, SaaS, and single sign‑on (SSO) integrations.
