Building Services Engineering Apprentice – Level 4

Building services play a critical role in ensuring these spaces are safe, functional, efficient and ready for occupation.
As a Building Services Engineering Apprentice, you’ll support the delivery of mechanical and electrical services on our projects, working in live, occupied or fast-track environments. You’ll gain hands‑on experience while developing the technical and coordination skills needed for a career in building services engineering within the engineering sector.
LocationThis role will be based in the North West, working within the Tilbury Douglas Engineering team. You’ll be site‑based across various projects, with some time spent in office‑based engineering and coordination environments.
What you’ll be doingAs a Level 4 Building Services Engineering Apprentice, you’ll combine on‑the‑job learning with formal study, developing the core skills required to support the design, installation and commissioning of building services systems.
You will study towards a Building Services Engineering Level 4 Apprenticeship, typically achieving a HNC or equivalent Level 4 qualification.
With the support of experienced building services engineers and project teams, you’ll:
- Support the delivery of mechanical and electrical services for including HVAC, lighting, power, fire, data and life‑safety systems
- Assist with site inspections, quality checks and coordination of M&E works within tight programmes
- Help interpret drawings, specifications and technical information in constrained or live environments
- Support coordination of building services with architectural finishes and other trades
- Assist with testing, commissioning and handover of building services systems
- Learn how health, safety and environmental requirements are managed in live or occupied buildings
- Support technical documentation, snagging and as‑built information
- Work closely with site managers, designers, subcontractors and clients to help resolve technical issues
- Develop an understanding of how building services contribute to high‑quality, compliant and client‑ready spaces
This apprenticeship offers a strong entry route into building services engineering, combining practical project experience with a recognised technical qualification. On completion, you’ll be well placed to progress into a Level 6 Building Services Degree Apprenticeship.
What we’re looking forWe’re looking for people who are organised, technically curious and keen to work in a fast‑paced environment. You’ll bring:
- GCSEs (or equivalent), including Maths and English
- A genuine interest in mechanical and electrical systems and interior construction
- Good problem-solving and coordination skills
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- A proactive, flexible approach with attention to detail
- A safety‑focused mindset
- A full UK driving licence (or working towards one by the time you start)
Previous engineering, construction or technical experience is desirable but not essential.
