We're now seeking to recruit a Financial Controller (FC) to lead the finance function for the Freight Services Business Unit, someone who can bring both technical and commercial strength, help shape financial governance, and play a key role in building the foundations for growth.
This is a senior; hands‑on leadership role suited to a proven finance professional ready to progress into a Finance Director position within the next 18‑24 months.
Reporting directly to the Business Unit Managing Director, and with a dotted line into the Group Finance Director, the FC will oversee a capable and developing team.
The Financial Controller will provide strategic and operational leadership across a multi‑country, multi‑depot environment, ensuring control, compliance, and commercial alignment while supporting profitable growth and improved cost visibility.

Work Scheme
- Financial Control & Governance – Lead and develop the BU finance team, ensuring clear structure, capability, and accountability. Oversee all BU financial reporting budgeting, and forecasting. Lead the month‑end and year‑end close process, ensuring accurate and timely results. Manage cashflow, and working capital and coordinate with Group Finance to ensure alignment of divisional reporting, consolidation, and audit cycles.
- Commercial & Strategic Leadership – Partner with the MD and leadership team to provide financial insight, challenge, and strategic input. Deliver accurate, actionable reporting by division, depot, and customer. Support contract pricing, cost‑to‑serve, and profitability analysis. Contribute to strategic planning, investment appraisal, and potential M&A projects. Present divisional financial performance and forecasts to Group Finance and the Board.
- European & Multi‑Entity Oversight – Strengthen internal financial control and oversight of all European subsidiaries and branches. Standardise reporting processes across all legal entities and ensure compliance with local and UK requirements.
- Systems, Processes & Data – Enhance finance systems, reporting tools, and workflows to drive efficiency and transparency. Support development of reporting for the BU. Support the company's drive for automation and digital transformation.
- Risk Management & Compliance – Implement strong financial controls to manage credit, compliance, and contractual exposure. Support group‑wide governance, audit readiness, and internal control structures. Ensure alignment with Group Finance on compliance, risk, and reporting standards.
We're looking for someone who brings:
- Essential
Skills & Experience:
Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA). Minimum 5 years' experience in a senior finance leadership role (Financial Controller, Head of Finance, or similar) within a £50m+ turnover business. Hands‑on experience managing full month‑end close, budgeting, and cashflow management. Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop a team. Strong analytical and commercial capability, confident providing insight to operational leaders. Experience with multi‑site and multi‑entity reporting.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, credible at Board and Group level. Advanced Excel and ERP/reporting system knowledge. - Desirable:
Background in logistics, transport, or manufacturing. Exposure to European accounting and group consolidation. Experience supporting M&A or integration projects. Ambition to progress to Finance Director within 18‑24 months.
