Overview

We are looking to recruit a sonographer to join our team at Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (St Helens & Knowsley sites). Applicants must hold a recognised ultrasound qualification (PgCert, PgDip or DMU) and be eligible to work in the United Kingdom.

A wide range of obstetric and non‑obstetric examinations are undertaken across two hospital sites (Whiston Hospital and St Helens Hospital) and at four community sites (St Helens Millennium Centre, Newton Community Hospital, Widnes Urgent Care Centre and St Helens Lowe House). The department also provides ultrasound services for inpatient, outpatient and GP services, and supports clinical placement for the University of Cumbria’s Direct Access MSc Ultrasound programme.

Responsibilities
  • Perform autonomously ultrasound examinations and clinically interpret images across a wide range of obstetric and non‑obstetric indications.
  • Provide high‑quality ultrasound scans in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Supervise and teach junior sonographers, medical staff and student sonographers.
  • Maintain a current CPD portfolio and keep up to date with advances in ultrasound techniques.
  • Work a seven‑day rota and be available for evening and weekend duties, including Hy Co Sy  examinations, ultrasound‑guided joint injections and breast interventional procedures.
  • Engage in audit analysis and provide accurate reporting of findings.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Recognised ultrasound qualification (PgCert, PgDip or DMU) and eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Significant experience in ultrasound and ability to scan accurately.
  • Experience in training or mentoring student sonographers.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Strong time‑management, IT literacy and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, counselling and presentation skills.
  • Diplomatic approach, flexible work ethic, ability to cope under pressure and a strong commitment to quality.
  • Willingness to undertake further training as required by the post.
