The Work Of a Trainee Asbestos Surveyor/Analyst Includes

As a Trainee Asbestos Surveyor/Analyst you will undertake a structured programme of site‑based learning and instruction from our qualified surveyors.

As part of your qualification programme you will undertake the BOHS P402 qualification (for surveying) and the P403 and P404 qualifications (for air monitoring) within the first six months of employment.

After completion of your training period and becoming fully authorised you will work in the field on client projects in both domestic and commercial properties. As a Pennington Choices Asbestos Surveyor/Analyst you will have the skills and tools to provide excellent and highly effective asbestos survey and analysis services and will be required to deliver accurate and timely survey reports in accordance with client contracts.

Once trained we will provide you with a fully equipped mobile laboratory (van) for your use while on site undertaking either surveys or air monitoring.

You will be based out of either our Bromley offices (covering the South), although there will be an expectation to cover other regions as required. The mix of our survey work is quite diverse, covering domestic and commercial properties from station buildings and shops to hospitals and churches.

About You
  • Pro‑active and calm, patient nature.
  • IT literate and experienced with MS Word and Excel.
  • Experience with stereo microscopes/polarised light microscopes desirable; prior lab experience is an advantage.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, able to work well with colleagues across all areas of the business.
  • Client satisfaction is incredibly important – you must communicate daily with on‑site members via telephone and email.
  • Because the rural location of our Warrington office requires travel, you must be a driver and have access to your own vehicle (our office is not serviced by public transport).
Key Responsibilities

The core role will be either client site or office based, and once trained and authorised, you will be undertaking management and refurbishment & demolition surveys, and air monitoring for clients.

Management Survey – A standard survey to locate, as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect asbestos‑containing materials (ACMs) in a building.

R&D Survey – Refurbishment & Demolition Survey – A refurbishment / demolition survey is required where the premises, or part of it, need upgrading, refurbishment or demolition. It ensures that nobody will be harmed by work on ACM in the premises or equipment.

Air Monitoring – Involves testing air to measure the level of respirable airborne asbestos fibres during work on ACM. Control monitoring is designed to test the effectiveness of control measures while work or removals are undertaken.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Proactively engage in the training and development provided by the company.
  • Once trained and authorised, conduct management and refurbishment & demolition surveys, take bulk samples and provide clearly presented and well‑written site notes on the tablet. Provide advice to clients ancillary to the survey and facilitate and oversee removal works where required.
  • Provide asbestos analytical services to clients, including air monitoring, fibre counting and (where qualified) bulk sample analysis.
  • Stay up to date with asbestos legislation, guidance and industry best practice including UKAS accreditation and quality management arrangements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of health & safety legislation.
  • Support the business by working flexibly and responsively from the company’s office or from client sites as required.
  • Take personal responsibility for maintaining technical expertise and an awareness of current issues in the sector.
  • Participate in the quality assurance arrangements and audit programme.
  • Act in accordance with the company’s conduct and attitude expectations as ambassadors.
  • Ensure all work is delivered on time by all business areas.
