OverviewThe Design Engineer is responsible for researching, designing and developing medical products (implants and instruments) within the assigned business unit, using CAD to generate electronic 3D models. Models will be verified to work as intended and converted into specification prints.
Responsibilities- Using computer software and complex 3D mathematical models to design, develop and test new material, devices and equipment, including building and evaluating prototypes, troubleshooting problems, and refining designs.
- Utilizing parametric techniques, sketcher, spreadsheets, freeform and assembly tools within the 3D software supported by Ortho Pediatrics.
- Liaising with technicians and manufacturers to ensure product feasibility in terms of design and economic viability.
- Discussing and solving problems with manufacturing, quality, purchasing and marketing departments.
- Creating and completing Functional Relationship Analysis (FRA) and the associated Protocols, Reports, and Layouts under defined conditions.
- Applying current ISO 13485, GD&T, and ASME standards to engineering prints.
- Working in a collaborative team environment.
- Using Master Control as a database to store and link required documentation.
- Ability to adjust priorities and manage time in a fast-paced environment.
- Maintain documents and records pertaining to research and development.
- Effective communication with customers; read, listen and communicate in English (verbal and written).
- Be results oriented with knowledge across a variety of disciplines.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Work independently with minimal direction.
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills.
- Requires a 2-year technical degree; BS strongly preferred. Five (5)+ years related engineering/design experience.
- Broad machine design experience; exposure to metal and plastic fabrication technologies.
- Proven skills with defined CAD packages.
- Ability to use ISO 13485 design controls and regulations to meet global regulatory guidelines.
- Good verbal and written communication skills (MS Word).
- Medical device development experience preferred.
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos; prepare routine reports; communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and employees in written and oral form.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to perform basic arithmetic operations and compute rate, ratio and percent.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions; handle problems involving several variables; extrapolate design intent and functionality from the Project Lead when direct input is not provided.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsRequires a valid driver’s license.
OtherSkills and Abilities
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint; ability to operate standard office equipment.
Physical DemandsRegularly sit and use hands; occasional climbing, standing, walking, reaching; ability to lift up to 25 pounds; vision requirements as specified.
Work EnvironmentNormal office environment with potential exposure to Surgical Operating Room environments; travel may be required.
