Senior Manager of Packaging

Senior Manager of Packaging is a strategic and technical leader responsible for overseeing packaging engineering initiatives across product development, commercialization, and lifecycle management. This role combines deep technical expertise with people leadership to drive innovation, ensure compliance, and foster a high‑performing team.

Essential Duties & Position Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead and manage a team of packaging engineers, fostering professional growth, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Define and execute packaging strategies that align with business goals, regulatory requirements, and market needs.
  • Champion a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and operational excellence within the packaging function.
  • Technical Oversight & Innovation
  • Provide technical direction for packaging design, material selection, and validation across sterile and non‑sterile medical devices.
  • Serve as a subject‑matter expert guiding cross‑functional teams in R&D, manufacturing, and quality.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and sustainability trends to enhance packaging performance and reduce environmental impact.
  • Design, Development & Documentation
  • Oversee the development of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging solutions, ensuring manufacturability and compliance.
  • Review and approve technical documentation, specifications, drawings, protocols, and reports.
  • Lead risk assessments, feasibility studies, and design reviews.
  • Testing, Validation & Compliance
  • Ensure packaging validation activities meet ISO, ASTM, FDA, and internal quality standards.
  • Guide development of test plans including transit testing, shelf‑life studies, and environmental conditioning.
  • Support regulatory submissions with comprehensive technical documentation and data analysis.
  • Cross‑Functional & External Collaboration
  • Partner with Regulatory Affairs, Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Marketing to deliver packaging solutions that meet stakeholder requirements.
  • Lead technology transfers and scale‑up activities, including equipment selection and process validation.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors, consultants, and contract manufacturers.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience in packaging.
  • At least 3 years in a people‑management role.
  • Proven expertise in packaging design, materials science, and validation methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements for Class II and Class III medical devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop engineering teams.
  • Experience managing cross‑functional projects and influencing stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools, packaging test equipment, and documentation systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience specifically in medical device packaging.
  • Knowledge of sustainability trends in packaging.
  • Experience with sterile and non‑sterile medical device packaging.
  • Background in technology transfers and scale‑up activities.
  • Experience managing relationships with external vendors and contract manufacturers.
